OKAY SO I WAS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT WERE AGAINST WLS FOR A LONG TIME. WELL NOW THAT I'VE DECIDED TO HAVE SURGERY THERE ARE 2 PEOPLE IN MY LIFE THAT I REALLY WANT TO SUPPORT ME AND THEY JUST DON'T SEEM TO BE ABLE TO.  MY SISTERS ARE MY BESTFRIENDS...............WE DO EVERYTHING TOGETHER AND WE SUPPORT EACH OTHER IN WHATEVER THE OTHERS DECIDE TO DO.  WELL WHEN I TOLD THEM THAT I WANTED TO HAVE WLS 1 WAS REALLY SUPPORTIVE SHE EVEN WENT TO MY CONSULTATION WITH ME.  NOW THE OTHER 2 ARE NOT SO SUPPORTIVE.  MY ONE SISTER DOESN'T EVEN WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT AND THEN MY OTHER SISTER IS SO MATTER OF FACT WHEN I DO TALK TO HER ABOUT IT AND THEN SHE SAYS LITTLE THINGS LIKE MAYBE ONCE YOU DO THE NUTRITION CLASSES YOU'LL LOSE ENOUGH WEIGHT AND DECIDE NOT TO GET THE SURGERY.

I'M NOT SURE WHAT I SHOULD DO.

A lot of people do not understand the WLS process.  Know that you have a support group on the groups at obesity help.    Continue on your journey and do not let anyone discourage you.

Hi Shanecia, Unfortunately there is really nothing you can do. This is something you and a lot of us deal with.  I didn't have too many people support me except my husband and a couple of people. That is why I turned to this maryland forum. I could talk about anything and I was understood.   What you can tell your sisters that are not supportive is that this is something that you have decided to do for your health. Just be the same way say it as a matter of fact and leave it there.   Most people do not understand too much about WLS and they can be quite negative and scared of the unknown.  Just tell them that you love them very much and this is something that you have to do for you.   My oldest daughter she was 21 at the time was very upset with me and told me that I was going to die when I had the surgery.  I told her that the chances of me dying with diabetes and a whole lot of other stuff in the future was a big chance I was not willing to take.   Good luck with dealing with your sisters and just keep the conversations limited about weight loss surgery with the 2 that are not supportive. Eventually they will have a different outlook after you have had surgery and have lost a good amount of weight. hugs,

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

Thank you so much.  I understand that part about diabetes.........I have hypertension and I'm on 3 medications and its still not well controlled with those.  I went to a support group tonight and I realized that the surgery and my weight loss my not completely take my hypertension away but it could at least take away at 2 of my medications.

You are going to do great and maybe the entire issue will resolve but if it doesn't resolve completely then like you said atleast you will not be taking all the meds like before.   We are here for you!!

Ditto Michelle and Cira. I only had 3 family members that were supportive. My own husband told me I was crazy. My surgeon told me about Obesity help.com and I found so much support here. I took the advice of a friend and I prayed and trusted in God that I knew I was making the right decision for me.  Very recently, a family member of mine made a negative statement to me, But you know what? I brush those off now and keep it moving. I'm determined that I'm not going to let anybody steal my joy.

Thank you so much Nadine i'm trying really hard not to let them steal my joy. Someone else told me that I should just not talking about it with my sisters that don't support me until after the surgery and then maybe they'll come around.  But if they don't at the end of the day i'm doing this for me and my health.

Shanecia - You've gotten some great advice, so I won't be redundant.  You are already on the right track for doing this for YOU, not for anyone else.  Although the people you love will benefit by hopefully having you around for a long time.  If any of your sisters have questions and want to join us here, by all means - after all, who better to answer questions than those who have gone before you? If they come around, fine, if they don't, well, you'll deal with that later.  Don't play, "What if...?"  You need to concentrate on the process and on becoming the healthiest Shanecia you can be.  I'm sure they're scared, too and while I know their lack of support is hurtful, please know that we're here for you!! Take care & Happy Easter!! Tia
