I am almost 4 weeks post op from surgery.  I had many complications after my surgery, 2 more surgeries for bowel obstructions and then pneumonia.  I am finallly home, for good, and having a heck of a time eating, I have no appetite and quite frankly scared to death to try anything for fear of vomiting, etc.  I know I haven't gotten my protein needs in at all, probably getting only 10-15 grams daily.  I need help with any suggestions anyone may have.  Recipes, anyway to get protein in, any suggestions for protein shakes, powders etc.  Please help so that I can finally be on the road to recovery for good.

Lisa, there are quite a few good protein shake recipes in the back of the "Bible" you should have received from Sloane.  Some good protein sources are: Breakstone's 2% small curd cottage cheese.  I buy the 4-singles pack.  Each one is 90 calories and 11g protein.  Baby bel light cheese has only 30 calories and 5g of protein.  This comes in 6 little wax-covered rounds in a net bag, usually found with the gourmet cheeses.  There is also Laughing Cow Light which comes in a round cardboard pack of 8 wedges.  They are 35 calories each and 2.5g protein.  Dannon Light n Fit Yogurt Vanilla has 80 calories and 5g protein.  To make some of the protein shakes, I use Any Whey tasteless protein powder which has 27g protein per scoop and 70 calories.  Unsalted Diamond Almonds...I use 1/4 of a serving which works out to 7 almonds, 40 calories and I believe 2g protein.  Sugar free Jello puddings having 60 calories and 1g protein.  The small cans of Swanson White Chicken breast are 70 calories and 13g protein.  Also consider tuna packed in water as well as canned shrimp (the one I use is 60 cals per serving and 13g protein), canned salmon, canned crab meat.  Beans are a very good source of protein.  I make chili using either 95% FF sirloin or ground white turkey breast.  Whatever you do, please be sure to read and re-read your book.  It takes a lot of review to remember things.  I know you are more sugar-restricted than me due to RNY so please review the sugar grams on anything I mentioned above to be sure you can have it. I'll post my chili recipe in a separate response in case you'd like it use it. Remember your vitamins/supplements, get as much protein in as you can and call Dr. Moein or Sloane if you need to.  Good Luck. Terri

Here's my Chili Recipe...and you can do it in the crock or for faster cooking, on the stove.

2 lbs. ground turkey breast (or 95% lean ground sirloin), browned and drained
1 can each of dark red kidney beans, light kidney beans, and black beans, drained
1 medium onion, chopped
3 cloves of garlic, chopped
1/2 each of red and green pepper, chopped
1 cup sliced baby bella mushrooms (optional)
2 cans Rotel tomatoes with jalapenos
1 small can tomato sauce
3 Tbsp chili powder
1/2 to 2 tsp. ground cumin, to taste
salt and pepper to taste

If I prepare on the stove, I brown meat in a dutch oven, drain and return then add all the ingredients, stir, bring to a boil and simmer for 2 hours.  If in a crock pot, add the browned and drained meat to the crock, then remaining ingredients.  Cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6.

Hi Lisa!  Hang in there.  Everyone has their own favorite tastes, but I am hooked, generally twice a day, on "Champion Nutrition" "Pure Whey Protein Stack, Cocoa-Mochaccino."  It is not too chocolatey, but has a nice taste.  It's not overly sweet.  Some of the other protein drinks soon became too sweet for me to deal with.  Sometimes I'll mix it with just a tablespoon of   Neslte Carnation Instant Breakfast.  And mix it with skim milk, which also adds protein.  Anyway, this Champion Nutrition product, and some other protein drinks besides, can be ordered directly from http://www.drugstore.com.  If you don't like chocolate, Champion Whey also makes a vanilla, and there's another product called "4 Ever Fit Fruit Blast the Isolate - Tangy Orange" that's pretty good.  Given your stomach distress, you might want to stick with the liquids for a while.     I'm sorry to hear that you are having so many problems.  If it's any consolation, I've never spoken with anyone for whom the nausea did not clear up after a time!  Life will get better.  Sugar free popsicles are often a calming treat on a tricky stomach.  They don't offer any protein, but they can be a nice treat.  And don't forget the need for fluids - You don't want to get dehydrated and back in the hospital!  So water, sugar free koolaid, Crystal Light, jello.... keep 'em all coming!  It will get better soon!  Hang in there!
