well i made it successfully through the surgery on thursday and came home yesterday. so nice to be home.  thank god i haven't had any of the nausea or vomiting.  still sore but not in pain.  would definately recommend the ON-Q to anyone going to have the surgery.  i still have it attached to me and probably will be for another day or 2.  not looking forward to giving myself shots though to prevent blood clots for the next two weeks but gotta do what the dr. says to do.  can't believe how many products out there have sugar in them even though they list them as sugar free.  hope everyone is doing well out there...

Congratulations!!! Sending you some healing vibes your way...I have a quesiton though....and if you arent up to responding back, if someone else on the board would, I would greatly appreciate it. Tell me more about the ON-Q and the shots for the next 2 weeks...Is this something that is "the norm" for Dr. Averbach/Singh's  patients?

yes the shots are the norm and the ON-Q is something you would ask them for just before you go in for the surgery.  The ON-Q is not something that you have to have but I would definately recommend it.  It doesn't hurt one bit, it conveniently fits in a little pouch that they give you and the strap is long enough to either hang over your shoulder like a purse, put around your neck and under your arm or have around your waist.  When you have your pre-op class they will go over all that.  The shots are no big deal though.  i have needles but these are small like those that are used for insulin.  Did my first one this morning and it didn't hurt one bit.  I will be doing them for the next 2 weeks.  It is to help prevent blood clots.  While you are in the hospital you will be getting shots for the prevention also.  My arm was a bit bruised from where they were giving me the shot but prevention is better then having to go back to the hospital for something that can really cause a lot of problems.  As I said, they will go over all of this when you go to your pre-op class at the office before the surgery.  I think having the ON-Q is helping me a lot though, getting ready now as I type to go shopping at walmart...lol...gotta get that exercise in already and be up on my feet to still get rid of the gas that they use to blow your stomach a bit so they can see what they are doing.  Don't worry about the shots, they are worth it and its not a big dose.  Anything else you want to ask, please don't hesitate.  I think Dr. Averbach/Singh's office is great and they will answer any questions you have without hesitation.  And if you are going to St. Agnes, they were great up there too.  Nothing like friendly doctors, nurses, and even interns to make your day a good one..

i probably was your neighbor i had my surgery on the 27th with Dr. Singh. I just took my on-Q tube out this morning. And it was so easy to take and it wasnt painful either. I think anyone who has a upcomming surgery should consider it.

you probably were my neighbor...what room were you in?? i was in 410.  I still have to say all the nurses, interns and dr's were great there.  only thing i wasn't too happy about is one of the dr's having an intern take out my JP tube.  it hurt like hell...he did it slow so it felt like all my insides were coming out with it.  but i was happy it was finally out.  will be happy with the ON-Q coming out.  will be able to sleep better knowing i won't roll over on it and have it burst..when is your post-op with your dr??

my stay there was good. it did take them a little while to answer when you beep them but other then that, they were in the room every few hours to check your vitals like they are supposed to and always asked your name so that they know you are the right patient.  i was in a bit of pain the night after the surgery, and told the nurse that and they came right in and adjusted my pump to release the medication every 5 min if i needed it and gave me an extra dose before they left the room so i was comfortable.  you probably wont' like the pureed food the day your supposed to leave.  i think the meat was chicken, the mashed potatoes were really thick, not runny like they are supposed to be and the corn, well....they must have put in a corn shaped mold so it actually looked like corn on the cob.  i didn't eat a whole lot of it but enough for the dr's to say i did good and i could go home.  now the pharmacy, they sucked.  went there just before 1pm on sat and didn't have my prescription card with me.  the girl was snotty and made sure she told me that they closed in 3 minutes.  and that they were closed on sunday.  if you have to get the shots like i did, go to walgreens, they have it.  i won't recommend going to the pharmacy at the hospital.  everyone else was great and joked a lot.
