yes the shots are the norm and the ON-Q is something you would ask them for just before you go in for the surgery. The ON-Q is not something that you have to have but I would definately recommend it. It doesn't hurt one bit, it conveniently fits in a little pouch that they give you and the strap is long enough to either hang over your shoulder like a purse, put around your neck and under your arm or have around your waist. When you have your pre-op class they will go over all that. The shots are no big deal though. i have needles but these are small like those that are used for insulin. Did my first one this morning and it didn't hurt one bit. I will be doing them for the next 2 weeks. It is to help prevent blood clots. While you are in the hospital you will be getting shots for the prevention also. My arm was a bit bruised from where they were giving me the shot but prevention is better then having to go back to the hospital for something that can really cause a lot of problems. As I said, they will go over all of this when you go to your pre-op class at the office before the surgery. I think having the ON-Q is helping me a lot though, getting ready now as I type to go shopping at walmart...lol...gotta get that exercise in already and be up on my feet to still get rid of the gas that they use to blow your stomach a bit so they can see what they are doing. Don't worry about the shots, they are worth it and its not a big dose. Anything else you want to ask, please don't hesitate. I think Dr. Averbach/Singh's office is great and they will answer any questions you have without hesitation. And if you are going to St. Agnes, they were great up there too. Nothing like friendly doctors, nurses, and even interns to make your day a good one..
