Post Surgery eating
My surgery is scheduled for 2/28/08 and I am looking to get some ideas from anyone out there on what their diets were like once they came home. Looking for some sample diets that can help me get on track the right way once i come home. I have the sugar free jello, sugar free pudding, broth soups, protein powder, vitamins. Could always use some help when it comes to pre-determining my intake for the day or week.
Be careful with all the suggestions, every Dr is different and has their own protocol and they are specific and they want you to follow their advise. If they do your surgery -understandably.. Plus they operate a little differently.Plus one thing that makes you sick may not make me sick, heck we change as time goes on our likes and dislikes. It is very interesting. I have Dr Averbach too and would be glad to talk with you. I have my green book from surgery -if they still use it and it had ideas and recipe's. I don't have time to write everything now but would love to talk to you. I am in Annapolis.
Dr Averbach is an excellent Dr. I was sent to him after Johns Hopkins and Un od Md. sent me to St Agnes because of their experience and I was very high risk. I am so grateful. My life is amazing as is Dr Averbach. I will send you a message with my phone number and email. If you need me to email I will do what I can. I am not online a lot. But please call anytime.

I am 2 years post op. One of the main suggestions I have is do not buy too much of any one nutritional product or food item (protein mixes, sugar free items, etc). I bought a bunch of stuff and
squirreled it aware thinking I was being prepared and stocking up so I didn't have to make trips to the store or GNC etc the first few weeks after the surgery. Not only may your 'tastes" change after surgery (they say due to ketosis- which can last 6+ months as it did for me)- but you may not be able to tolerate the product immediately after surgery. I make these general suggestions based on my experience of course- everyone's experience is unique- I was HIGHLY lactose intolerant after the surgery and could not consume the protein mixes and protein drinks I had purchased. 2 years out- I can tolerate them better but it took about a year before I could do the mixes I bought. Plus I have a strong sensitivity to reduced sugar or sugar free products containing sugar alcohols---they give me immediate GI distress and soon after dirrahea.
And even now, I still cannot tolerate more than 2 grams of sugar alcohols in a serving. I can actually consume up to 10 grams of sugar in a serving without much reaction other than bloating/gas - which I still have all the time.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and success in your journey
