Anyone have Dr. Kuldeep Singh?
thanks for the info. I saw Dr. Singh on Thursday for the first time and he told me that he would recommend the lap band over RNY. I was thrown off course. I went in expecting that the RNY would be my only choice. I can't stop thinking about which one I will choose. I know all the ins and outs of both surgeries. I need to lose about 120 pounds. I am torn. I still have two months of supervised diet to go and I will be set to apply for coverage.
Hi Snuglbuny! I'm in Columbia, too! I see Dr. Averbach (Dr. Singh's partner) and I'm 5 weeks post-surgery. When I went for my consult in December, I had my heart set on having the lap band. I had about 80 lbs. to lose. Dr. Averbach actually talked me out of it. He said that the weight loss is much more gradual w/ the lap band and he is not a big fan of it. He said that there can be some complications w/ it, too. I'm not trying to steer you either way - I'm just letting you know my experience.... Dr. Averbach said that the RNY is the "gold standard" surgery for weight loss. I tossed and turned many nights after my consult, but I eventually opted for the RNY.
Have you been to any of the support groups? Maybe you can attend both (one for RNY and one for Lapband) and talk to people who have undergone both procedures. It might help put things in perspective for you.
I'm sure that whatever you decide will be the best decision for you. But, it can never hurt to get a second opinion before undergoing any type of major procedure. There's another great doctor in Baltimore, Alex Gandsas, and I think he's at Sinai Hospital. Maybe getting a second opinion will help you make a decision...
Good luck with whatever you decide!!

Good luck with whatever you decide!!When i first saw Dr. Singh he suggested the lap band for me too.But after I did all my research I made my final dession to go with the RNY. I know if i diddnt get the results I wanted I would be very up set. But I am telling from my own experience if you change you mind and not go with the lap band make sure they change your charts. Thats a long story about that one with me.
I had lapband with Singh and had to go on a 2 week liquid diet, he decides whether you need to or not by feeling the liver, if it feels fatty, he recommends the liquid diet. The purpose of the liquid diet is to shrink the liver which makes the surgery easier.
Dr. Singh recommended I go with the RNY but I opted for the less invasive procedure, i think this is going to work in the long run for me, as long as I use the tool properly.
I was on a two week pre-op liquids. It wasn't too bad except that my fathr-in-law passed away during that time and thos few days were hard for me. I stuck with it except on the day of my FIL's service. Just couldn't do it BUT, I did make very wise choices at the reception and ate a LOT less than I normally would have.
If Dr. Singh recommends the pre-op liquid, it's for a reason. Stick with it to help make your surgery successful!
Good luck
Deb
