I saw it first on AOL, then on the main board here.
It has got to be one of the most rediculous things I have ever heard. It won't pass, but the time and money wasted to get it to vote could be used for good, instead of stupidity. How about using it for nutrition education, or to provide funds for people who can't afford healthcare, health clubs or surgery?
It's just the same old thing we've been hearing since we became obese. If we just didn't eat bad, and we exercised, we'd lose the weight. Isn't that the thin person with perfect metabolism speaking for the world, as usual?
Hugs!

While he brought attention to a nationwide health issue in the most insulting of ways not only to the restaurants but to those who have been dealing with obesity for years.
I will be sending him an email later on tonight telling him if he wants to be serious about the issue of obesity in MS to do as the State of MD deal -- pass a law that any company operating in the state of Maryland with more than 50 employees must provide insurance to cover the surgery. Now that's getting serious about the issue. Shoot, since he has his home phone number on the website, I might call him and calmly suggest that he do just that and if he's interested I'll even email him the law.

I called Representative Dean's home tonight since his number is on the website. Spoke with his wife -- very nice lady and we talked about the issue for a few moments. She thought I was calling to gripe when actually I was calling to suggest they look at the Maryland law if he is serious about doing something about the obesity issue in the State of Mississippi. She went on to tell me that the MS Medicaid is deeply in debt -- regarding issues that are co-morbidities -- diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. She was very receptive to the call and the conversation. He is in session until noon on Monday and I'm going to email him and provide him with Maryland's law and he can investigate further.

Well, when I looked at his website and saw he and I graduated from the same University and his first name is the same as my Dad's and his last name is my family nickname-- I figure -- eh even though he's a Republican he can't be too bad of a fella so I'll call and talk to him.
Yeah, during the weekend I'm going to send an email as well. His wife said they usually try to finish session by noon on Friday and then he comes home for the weekend. He lives 3 hours away from the capital so he stays down there doing the week.
So we'll see what he does to help his constiutents if he really wants to help fight obesity, pass a law that would make employers carry the insurance to pay for the surgery. I found out it's not the insurance companies who decide not to cover the surgery -- it's the employer's who make that decision. I found that out when I went to the dentist and wanted the implants but insurance want pay for it; the company will pay for a bridge that could potentially damage your good teeth instead of offering the additional option of implants -- go figure.
