I'm going out of town after the 1st and just started to look over my papers for surgery (to make sure everything was in order).  Then I notice I didn't have the form for pre-op test and blood work.  So I call the office to get the information.  I left a message with Barbie and spoke to someone.  My call was returned after hours.  Barbie was so helpful. It seems I need an UGI, meaning to have the barium swollow.  When I first researched and read other blgs most said they had endoscopes.  I called and asked the office and was told either one would do.  Barbie now said I need the UGI before the surgery can be done.   I am so glad I found this out before going for the pre-op meeting.  Having it done is no problem at all.  I know each doctor is different but out of couriosity I have one questions:  What did you have done?

Hi Gloria, I had the endoscopy done and it was a cinch!  I was knocked out and didn't feel anything. Maybe they think you need the UGI instead for some reason. You can ask them why. I am glad you found the error in your paperwork now.  Make sure to keep them on their toes since you do not need any delays. Take care

Hi, Cira.  My endoscope was ever so easy and I was scared of that, also.  I just don't want to do the swollow.  I guess I'm scared of the taste.  From what i've read I have to one the next morning after surgery so maybe I can use this as a practice test. By the way, that was a beautiful family picture (even if I don't do holidays). Is it only 2 more months before the addition?. I was a winter baby.  Tell Cara I miss her.   Till later. Gloria

I didn't know you already had an endoscopy done before. Was that for GBMC requirements or something else?   I had that test the next day of surgery and I almosr puked it all out. It was nasty tasting and I am glad they didn't make me drink too much of it.   I will let Cara know that you miss her. I am calling her today.   Hugs,

I had the endoscopy. I have to have them every so often due to Barrett's Esophagus. They give you a quick twilight drug and bring you back to reality in no time. You get to sleep the rest of the day as the anesthesia wears off. I would opt for that route.

Thanks, Amie.  I did the endoscopy back in the beginning.  With that the hardest thing was inserting an IV.  And that went smooth.  i was told that UGI's will be mandatory from now on. The office will be writing new requirements per program Gloria.

Hey Gloria!  I have the Upper GI with the barium.  I wasn't as horrible as I imagined it would be, but I hope to never have to do it again!

I also had an UGI. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. The taste doesn't stay with you. If I had to choose between that and the phospho soda, I'd pick the UGI twice, lol.
Hugs!

Thanks, Kathy.  I need that reassurance.  But I did find that putting phospho soda in ginger ale soda was not as bad a putting it in juices.   And I tolerated that 3X this year. (PS:  That is a horrible taste that lingers for a while.)
