Alcohol

Hi Everyone, it's been along time since I've posted anything but I do still come here usually once a week to read and see what's going on with everyone. I'm now over 7 months out and down 95lbs and have never been happier.  My question  is concerning Alcohol....I know everyone is different so I'm just a little curious as to what type of things everyone else drinks how you react to it. I've only drank beer for fear that I'd get sick from other drinks. I don't want to have anything with sugar and figure beer is the safest. However, usually I'm buzzed with 1 and by the end of the 2nd I'm gone and don't go beyond that 2nd one. Just curious....

My doctor and I signed a contract with each other pre-op.  One of the conditions in the contract was NO alcohol for the first year post op.    I'm now coming up on 4 years post op (in March 2008).   I will have an occasional glass of wine when we go out and often have a bottle of wine open at home if I want a glass to sip and enjoy when I get home from work or on a weekend. I definitely do not drink anything alcoholic if I am the one who is driving.   One glass of wine will definitely put me in a buzz.   I often think I want a 2nd glass and two sips into that 2nd glass I wonder what was I thinking. Keep in mind that alcohol is empty calories and while we are malabsorptive to a point  calories STILL count. Best wishes as your WLS journey continues. Hugs, Mo

Comparison is the thief of joy!

If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished.   Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago.   I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits!   Wherever you are in your journey  ... It's ALL good!!!

During the first year while we are losing weight so rapidly our livers are working harder then ever. Any kind of alcholic drink makes the liver work harder yet. So it is my understanding that we should not be drinking at all during this period of time. So all the rolling rock is safe from me right now. LOL!!

I have tested the waters of alcohol. I never liked beer so I haven't touched it. I would also be concerned with the carbonation of beer. It doesn't take much to get one buzzed following weigh loss surgery. You can feel it so quickly. It will also disappear nearly as fast. Just be careful.

My doc says I can drink 3-4 oz of wine.  Period.  However, I probably won't even do that for the first year or two.  Because of my surgery (VBG w/Sleeve), I'm not allowed to drink carbonated drinks nor am I allowed to use straws...  Beer definitely fits into this category.  When the air gets under my band, it makes me feel sick, like I have to throw up.  I burp and it feels much better.   Also, I have seen people mention that alcohol will stretch our pouches.  I don't claim to understand why this is but I don't need to in order to believe them.  And trust me, I will miss not having a margarita every now and again.
