Hospital co-insurance

I just got the bill for this today. I knew it was due in advance, so this is no surprise. But, is GBMC the only hospital that bills for this in advance? I have never had an inpatient procedure, so I don't know what the usual is. I do know that when people I know have had surgery, they have been billed for their co-insurance.  Is this something new?

Hi Kathy, I'm not sure is this is the norm or not.  I went through GBMC also and one word of advice: Please keep close track of your EOB's from your insurance company after surgery.  I paid my coinsurance in advance (as requested and based on Rose's estimate) and after surgery, figured out that I had overpaid by $1000.  And then I started to get bills from the hospital.  ????? It took me two months of phone tag with the office for them to even admit that a mistake had been made.  I'm still waiting for a refund check.  Hopefully everyone doesn't go through this, but just in case, keep an eye on your statements.

One day medical billing powers that be will standardize and work from the same up to date information. My advice is wait for all the bills to come and then start worrying about who gets what. Even though you have probably told everyone who would listen about your insurance, they might not all bill them first. I paid the 85.00 office fee and then received a bill the following week. They use the same statement as the hospital and it genuinely confused me. Rose made it clear since I was a self pay the whole amount was due at least 2 weeks before surgery. I almost asked what hapens if the surgery is cancelled, but left that one alone. No idea if GBMC is the only hospital with this policy. I'm gettin excited for ya, time is short. Mark

Kathy Sinai did not bill but I still have not gotten any bills from them.  I know there is sometimes a co-pay for surgery but they billed for your hospital stay already? Hugs Kristen

My insurance wraps it all up in one. I have one co-pay for the whole stay. They billed for it, and said it has to be paid prior to admission. My surgeons office says it's due 15 days in advance, and they actually want me to pay it when I go in to sign consents this week, which is more than 15 days in advance.

I wouldn't know if it is the norm.  My insurance cover everything 100% I only had a few 10 dollar co payments. Make sure to keep close tabs on everything and save everybill in case there is a discrepency later on. Hugs,

Kathy, I am on disability and medicare so I have to pay the co-pay for the hospital when I sign the papers.  I had read many blogs under the insurance part and some talked about actually paying the co-pay before admission, or day of surgery and even on day of discharge.
