Okay, here we are, one month out.  No diabetes meds since before surgery, and this morning, I fell below the cut-off for fasting a.m. glucose.  And the band "doesn't help diabetes"?  Balderdash!!!!!!!

I think the weight loss helps diabetes . .and whether it's band or RNY or other .. you are losing ..  Congratulations!!! Hugs, Mo

Comparison is the thief of joy!

If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished.   Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago.   I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits!   Wherever you are in your journey  ... It's ALL good!!!

In the end, I think it IS mainly the weight loss that does it.  Remember that statistic they're always quoting about even a 10% loss improving your health dramatically?  Generally, with just about any WLS, you get to the 10% point pretty fast. But there are surgeons, including mine, *****commend the RNY for diabetics.  It was my understanding that it isn't just that dumping will keep you away from white carbohydrates or that you have a faster short-term loss with a malabsorptive procedure.  Apparently, there's something in the part of the stomach that gets bypassed that actually affects insulin levels, or so they think. I also think it's about the protein-heavy post-op diet.  Limiting simple carbs and upping the protein would lower just about anyone's blood sugar.  Arguably, going to Atkins or South Beach might have produced the same result, but really -- how many of us would have made all the dietary changes we did without WLS?  I wouldn't have. Congrats! That is AWESOME!! Your lap-band is a tool. A tool that you are using to it's fullest, and having great success with.  If others didn't use their tool as well, they might not see the same result. Through personal experience I know that reducing carbs CAN bring down blood glucose levels in some people, as it did for me.  It's not a magic cure. I've known people who had RNY who eat a lot of carbs. A co-worker of mine who had it 4 years ago eats a bagel for lunch every day. The only thing that causes her to dump is pasta. So, there is no magic recipe for the perfect WLS result. It's all about using the tool they give you, and making the most of it. Congrats on doing that, and seeing such great results!
Hugs!
