Alert Bracelets
Do any of you where an alert bracelet to let others know about your surgery and/or the drugs that we cannot take?
Reason I ask I was hospitalized last week with pneumonia and the docs acted like they never heard of gastric bypass and I didn't feel real confortable with their treatment and I was awake. Imagine if I was out of it for some reason.
If you do can you tell me where you go yours?
Thanks,
Melaine
I belong to medic alert, www.medicalert.org. It's the oldest and most established org and is also international. Plus you can send them all kinds of documents regarding your health and they can relay specific info immediately to health care officials. It's cheap to join and they have a whole array of alert jewelry from like $9 up to several hundred. My whole family has daibetes and has belonged since day 1 and it saved them all at different times. Haven't needed mine yet, knock wood! Good luck, Nancy
I also belong to MedicAlert. I really liked the fact that I can update my medical information and keep it up to date and it is available at any time.
Just a word of advice in chosing a bracelet/necklace, make sure it looks like what it is .. a medical alert ... don't go for something pretty and jewelry looking or it may be overlooked in an emergency situation.

Comparison is the thief of joy!
If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished. Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago. I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits! Wherever you are in your journey ... It's ALL good!!!
I haven't gotten a bracelet yet. There is too much info to put on the bracelet about meds etc so the health care provider would have to contact medic alert for your details. How likely are they going to do that?
I still have to remind my PCP about time released or enteric coats meds- she may prescribe them but really has no idea of the coating---so it is turfed to the pharmacist. I don't want my bracelet to say no NSAIDS as we can have them via IV just not by mouth/stomach route without having Anti Ulcer med with it- like Prevacid.
I guess the bracelet is best for emergency situations where a person is not conscious and no one able to direct EMS or ER staff. I wonder what specifically the emergency care staff need to know about post op RNY?
