Well, I am off today to get my Psych. consult, have attended  Dr.'s Seminar and will be...Self pay I thought about the options and considered the price of a mid size car is some where in the range of $25-30,000  and those are only good for 4-5 years before we get tired of them or trade them in.  And I AM SO WORTH MORE THEN A CAR.  Plus I will get an  better trade in...A new body and A new life!   SO,  I will berefinancing our home with  cash out,   and I will be on my way...Anyone else out there have to self pay?

Yes, I was self-pay too. I was tired of the insurance complications, and figured my life was worth more than $25K so 'what was I waiting for'? I have no regrets; it's the best money I have ever spent. Luckily, I did so well with the surgery, they let me go the very next day, and I ended up getting reimbursed $4k from the hospital!! I think you are making a great decision. What good is money if you're too unhappy to really enjoy it? I have not been this happy for a long time. Congrats on making such a life-changing decision! You're worth it!! ~~ Trish

I like how you think!  You are soooo right about being worth it. I was a self pay, but most of the testing was paid for by Carefirst. Sadly, if I had chosen a higher option, most of the procedure would have been covered. It has so far been a relatively easy ride. I wish you the same Mark

Yes we all  have to decide we are worth the investment for the surgery.  I had my operation on Sept. 10th....I have had any problems so far and feel great.  No pain after surgery I had open RNY at Bayview Hosp. and he also took my gallbladder.  I am blessed with my decision to self pay and blessed with the results so far.  I only had great reports and remarks about my Doctor.  It is worth every penny in costs. Dont let your insurance company keep you from a happy, healthy and most imporant  slender life ahead.

thanks for the replies, when you self pay I am assuming we will have to PRE pay.  Do the Dr.s give you a total amount they need before they schedule you a date?  or are we responsible for the bills as they come  in? Also curious,  $$$ what range?  I have read $20-27,000?  I need to know for my loan I am Going to be going to the University Of Md hospital center for weight management with Dr. Kligman.

I was also self pay at Bayview. The cost was 25,500 and I did have to prepay.  So far so good. The hospital staff was helpful and very professional.   I also used the new car analogy and I am comfortable with my decision.  I will never look back! Good luck with your journey! Melanie RNY: 9/30/07
