OK, Before anyone starts I know that it is very bad for you and I know that I should just quit and stop, but it is sooooo hard.  I have a question.  I know that they check to make sure that there is no tobacco is your system before they will do the surgery, and I know that they will do a blood test, but is it the blood work they pre-op or is it something they check prior to surgery or both????  I did quit for several months back when I first started this process, but started again recently (family medical issues) and the stress just took over.  My surgery date is 9/21 and I plan on stopping no later than 9/1 but I was just curious if anyone knew when and how they tested. Thanks in advance.

Hi Gina, One thing for sure I can tell you that might happened if your lungs cilias are not working properly while after you have surgery your lungs can collapse and you will definitely be intubated in ICU for a while.  These tiny little hairs move gently to keep mucus and dirt out of the lungs. It is just something to think about.   I was a smoker and when I had a major gall bladder attack in December of 1993 I never knew that I would be in the hospital for man 3 weeks almost dying because my lungs collapsed.   Just wanted to share.   The best thing to do is quit today cold turkey is the best way since your surgery is less that 30 days away.  Most dr's want their patients to be smoke free at least 30 days befor suregery.  I know how hard it is to quit I smoked for 15 years 1 to 1 1/2 packs a day. I decided to quit cold turkey along with my husband in 1998.  I wish you all the best.

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

Gina hey there I have been told by other people that if they even try to smoke after surgery, they are sick as a dog with nausea and some have vomited.  I would just try to quiet now.  Call your PCP there is a new drug on the market, I am not sure what it is call but it really works.  It is by prescription only, you still have sometime to kick it out.  Possitive energy to ya love Hugs Kristen

Gina,    I to am a smoker and have been for about 40 years. You being so young. You should stop that bad habit now. I stopped smoking for both the GBP and my face lift. I have a friend that is 32 had BPS the day before me and didn't stop smoking before surgery. she ended up in the hospital  for 2 weeks because her lung collapsed. And she's back smoking. Needless to say if she wanted to have a body lift "that she wants but doesn't have the money for" the doctor wouldn't operate on her with a ten foot pole. One one smoker to another. stop now! Good luck! Ellie

Gina, You may want to ask your PCP and Dr. Lidor about a drug called Chantix for smoking cessation. My parents both used it to stop smoking, after years of failed attempts. They have been non-smokers for 8 months now. Just ask your PCP and Dr. Lidor first to make sure there are no contraindications with your surgery!!
