Hi everyone, I have been lurking the forum for about a week and have been so impressed with everyone's helpfulness. So, I thought I would join in. I have scheduled a consult with Dr. Schwietzer for September 24th, which seems so far away. I have UHC, which was very helpful on the phone and it sounds as if I may be covered, but I must have a BMI of 40. I am on the borderline of a BMI of 39-40, we will see what Dr. S says. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated! Glad to meet you all!

Hi and welcome to the Maryland forum!!!  Best wishes as your WLS journey begins.   You've found a wonderful group of caring and supportive people here to help you through as your journey continues. Hugs, Mo

Comparison is the thief of joy!

If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished.   Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago.   I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits!   Wherever you are in your journey  ... It's ALL good!!!

Dr. S is WONDERFUL -- I'm three weeks out (had a DS) and you couldn't be in better hands.  Just curious, did you check out the DS? Also, I too had a low BMI (well 41) and as long as you have a comorbid you will still qualify with a BMI 35-40.  Of course, it doesn't take much to bump up to 40, not that I'm advocating that, but it would be fun, wouldn't it?!  Anyway, welcome, and if you're curious, check out the DS board!  HUGS< Nancy

Hi Callie,  welcome, from another newbie. I already feel quite at home. Seems like such a great group!  I have Aetna, and my BMI, unfortunately, but fortunately is over 40. But, between 35 and 40 they would still be covering it as long as I had a co-morbidity.  Honestly, if I were borderline, I'd try to put a few extra pounds on, just to qualify. I hope that doesn't sound too ignorant. But, if you are that close, less than 5 pounds could push you over.
Hugs!

Hi, I have United Health Care and my insurance does not cover unless I am 40 or more, so I do understand what you are saying. I checked the BMI calculator I would have to gain about two pounds, I really do not think putting one two pounds to be approved for the surgery is a bad thing. I have been extremely over weight for the majority of my life. I really do not want to be denied due to two pounds. Thanks so much for the advice and the great welcome!
