Back to work in a week?????
Hi all......
I am a bit perplexed as I am scheduled for a LAP RNY this monday and when I went to the surgeon's office today for a 'weigh-in', the nurse told be to expect to be back at work on the 13th! I have an hour commute to work, not to mention a slew of medical issues (which I am prying will be resolved with the surgery), and do not think it would be a wise move to go back to work that soon.....Any thoughts? At this point, I am thinking of being a 'no-show' Monday.......

I have an hour commute 1 way and I am not trying to drive all the way there to stay for 1/2 a day (especially since I wouldn't even get paid for a full 1/2 day.....yes I work for a company that has weird rules)-I would rather be home for 2-3 weeks and get my FULL pay so that when I do go back, I can be there for the FULL day and have less to worry about and be pretty used to what my body is going through.

Hi,
I think it is a little presumptuous on the nurse's part to assume that you'll be back at work in a week after LAP RNY. Everybody reacts differently to surgery and the adjustment that comes with eating afterward. It took me 3 weeks to feel any semblance of "normal" and to be able to take a shower without feeling totally drug out after my LAP RNY in July 2005. That being said, I know of two women who had LAP RNY and who felt little to no pain and who were out at the mall within a week.
Don't let a nurse's remark make you re-think the surgery. She probably thought she was saying something helpful to you rather than something that would make you pause and think.
I hope all goes well with your surgery and you have a trouble free recuperation. We'll be saving that spot on the Loser's Bench for you!
Take Care
Thank you so much Terry. The nurse even went so far as to say that if I did take off more than a week I would probably end up "feeling guilty" like other people have. Since the surgeon didn't call me yesterday so I could address the issue with her, like the receptionist said she would, I guess I'll just have to talk to her about it Monday.....UGH

I went back to work on Day 6 post-op (It's now day 11 for me). I have an office job and sit behind a PC all day. I was beat at the end of each day and took nice long naps when I got home.
The one thing I would caution you with is the pain meds. I have Roxiset (liquid Percaset) and a full dose knocks me out completely. So, I was taking half doses and I did not drive. My wife was able to drop me off each day on the way to her office.
I haven't taken any pain meds in about three or four days and I drove for the first time yesterday. Woohoo... Freedom!!

Thank you for the info Eric. Congratulations on your surgery! That's great your wife was able to drop you off-I have an hour commute each way & my husband is not able to take me....Maybe I won't need the pain meds after I get home from the hospital since my surgery will be LAP-We will just have to see I guess-Good luck on your weight loss journey-I'll be joining you soon, I hope!

I too have a long commute and I took three weeks off. I did get tired at the end of the day.
If it helps I only took my paid med twice after leaving the hospital: and one of those was
when I had started pulling the drain out after taking a shower ( accidently of course).
Good luck with the surgury. You will be fine . I would honestly take two weeks off
just to be on the safe side.
My surgery was two years ago, so I dont know how much has changed. But I do know that I took three weeks off, and was quite ready to go back at that time. I think I could have gone back at two weeks without difficulty. But one week? No way.
I did not take any pain relievers after I got home from the hospital. I might have, except that I was released on a Sunday, and the only open pharmacy did not carry the liquid that was prescribed, so I did without. I do not recall being in much pain. But I do know that the first week or two it was difficult to adjust to the drinking/eating routine and the preparation of my "meals." I was bit wobbly on my feet for the first week, but by the end of two weeks I was walking 1/2 mile.
