Is there anyone out there with Sheet metal workers local #100 insurance? When I call to ask, what should I say so as not to put my foot in my mouth. I think I remember seeing in the book , that they do not cover any weight loss surgery. But this was years ago, and I don't have the book anymore. I need to call and ask, but Idon't want to say the wrong thing and have them make notes in my file that may harm my chances of getting this covered.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Dee, I suggest you call your insurance administrator and just ask if weight loss surgery is covered and if so, which ones.  That shouldn't result in them making a note in your file and if they do, so what?  If they cover it, and you've got the BMI, co-morbidities (diabetes, high bp, GERD, sleep apnea, etc, etc.,) they should approve it with the submittal of proper documentation.  They may require a 6 month supervised weight loss program.  If this is the case, they should be able to outline all of htis for you in a phone call or be able to send you something.  If they have an exclusion in the policy for all WLS surgery, it'll be tough to get them to cover it, but who knows.  I suggest you make the initial call to inquire about it and depending on the answer you get, plan from there.  If you really want this, don't let anything stand in your way.  You can scroll down the posts from the past few days and see where many of us responded to a post regarding the "positives" of having the surgery.  I responded with a lengthy list and could've easily doubled what I listed.  My only regret is that I did not have this surgery sooner!  Don't let a negative response from the insurance company or lack of support from some of those you know keep you from getting what you want/need.  Yes, there are many people out there making judgments regarding WLS based on misinformation or no information and they believe this is the "easy" way out - the easy way out is to sit and do nothing about the situation. Keep your chin up and don't give up :-)

Take Care,
Terry

I called this morning. I was told that all weightloss treatments are excluded. That there is no coverage at all for anything related to weightloss.

Next time  you talk to them, ask about treatments for morbid obesity.  They might cover that.
