Can I take my medications after surgery
Hello to all - well, I've gone through a period of doubts considering the complications that can come from gastric bypass surgery and now have peace about it. I really want this - I believe it's the only way that my life can be anything but completely awful.
Now that I've laid my fears to rest, I have questions. First of all, my hubby and I are going to the St. Agnes seminar on Aug 8th. I have so many questions to ask the surgeons so I thought I'd try to get some out of the way by coming here.
I take A LOT of medications - all are pretty small, but at bedtime I take 11 pills. Are you able to take medications after surgery and for that initial couple of months that your pouch is so delicate? If you can't take meds, what do you do?
I can hopefully see myself going off some of these as I lose weight, but just starting out I will still need to be on them. I'd appreciate knowing what your Dr.s had you do regarding meds.
BTW - I hope to have the Rou N Y surgery.
Thanks!
Jane from Southern MD
Hi Jane- You can take the medications that your surgeons feels you will still require following surgery. I was told I could go back to taking my prozac. I tried, but couldn't stand the taste. One of the fantastic things about this surgery is eliminating all of those pills. I toook 10 pills a day for diabetes and other issues. I take none of them now.
You will have to crush the medication in order to take them following surgery. They tell you to mix them in pudding or something like that.
You are on your way!

Eliza,
My surgeon was Dr. Averbach at St. Agnes. Both he and Dr. Singh (and their staff) are wonderful. Without being a Dr. (and specifically your doctor) I don't think anyone here can truly answer your question. If you decide that WLS is for you, you'll undergo testing and will be asked to provide copious amounts of information prior to having the surgery. I believe that after reviewing your information and after your surgery is scheduled, they will advise you how to handle taking your meds following surgery. I had to take a few (between 2-4) and I didn't have any problems. You just take them with a sip of water. Just voice your concerns and they'll find a way to work around it. Depending on the medication and what it is for, you may find that you no longer need to take it immediately following surgery.
