Back in the hospital

Hi guys, I just got home from the hospital. I went in Thursday night around 9pm.  I was vomiting and had a stomach ache. They did tests and said I probably just had a bug. They said they found red blood cells in my urine and that usually meant kidney stones but that they didn't see any on the x-rays or ct scan. I left there at 7 am Friday. When I got home there was a message on my answering machine saying that the x-rays were misread and to call. I did and the dr said I had a very large obstructive kidney stone and to come back immediately.   Turns out it is a one centimeter stone on my right kidney and is blocking my kidney from working right and it is swollen. I have no pain from this and all the doctors are amazed. I know I will be having lots of pain before this is over. They scheduled me to have a stent put in tonight, but when I spoke with the urologist he said I could also have lithotripsy done and would be the least invasive so we agreed on that. I wish I knew what the right thing was to do. I am a big whimp and I'm worried about what's the right thing to do.  Mo, help. I know you've been going through this, as well. Drink your water!! Doc said I need to get at least 96 ounces in a day. That is a real challenge. Wish I had been doing it all along. Sorry, this was so long. Wanda

Wanda, I am so sorry you are going through this.  I am sure everything is going to be alright after they do both procedures.  I hope and pray that you do not suffer any major pain.  I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.   What hospital are you in?   Big hugs

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

Thanks Cira, I was at GBMC room 4829. Was that your room? lol  I am hoping not to have two procedures, just the one blasting one.  Seems like I was just wishing the wls was over and I was a few months past and now wishing this was over and done with. I know you are no stranger to unexpected complications. I am so happy yours is past you and you are doing well. Wanda

(((( Wanda )))) I wish I could tell you this wasn't a miserable thing but having been through the kidney stone thing on and off over the last couple of years it's not fun at all.   This most recent attack has been the worst and I have both a stent and have had lithotripsy.   The stent will be removed (not nearly soon enough for me !!!)  Believe me .. the next time I'll vote for lithotripsy without the stent. Drink LOTS of fluids and hopefully they have given you something for the nausea and pain.   I have lortab for the pain and that helps a whole lot.   If the doctor didn't explain it to you, the nausea and throwing up is your body's reaction to the severe pain. Unfortunately, as bariatric patients some of us are going to be prone to kidney stones.  My urologist has said we will 'manage' the stones because he understands my needs as a WLS patient and we may not be able to 'prevent' them but hopefully catch them before they become an issue and I have an attack. Hugs, Mo

Hi Mo, The weird thing is I am not in any pain and was only throwing up that one night. I had no fever and had the shivers really bad on and off. The urologist said it was probably due to the stone moving into ureter where it appears stuck and making the kidney swell.  He said I could come in next week and get the lithotripsy. The sad thing is I have the Tim and Faith concert on Saturday and I'm not going to miss it. lol  He said he felt it was no problem to wait until the following week. If the stone had been smaller it would have a better chance of moving. He put me on antibiotics and gave me Dilautin if I start having pain before the procedure.

I'm just a big baby. I know I will be ok. It's just the going through the rough time to get there that worries me.

Hey Wanda, Is your uro with Anne Arundel Urology?   I've been fairly happy so far with them (other than I don't like this stent thing!!) As long as the stone is in the kidney and not moving, you are not likely to have pain.  It's when it starts moving that it becomes an issue.   My stent is in to 'expand' the ureter so that the particles will pass easily, but the stent is uncomfortable.  I feel crampy all the time. The swelling kidney is something to be concerned about though .. so be sure you don't pu**** if you get feeling badly then get your sweet little butt to the ER. Hugs, Mo
