Surgery Scheduled for July 07

I just wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself and say hi on the Maryland forum.  I'm 41, live in St. Mary's Co. and am scheduled to get the Lap Band in late Jul 07.  I'm going to Dr. Elariny in NoVA for the surgery.  However, I am considering switching to Dr. Chan.  Since he's the associate, there's a $1,600 difference in cost.  I am a self pay.  Has anybody used Dr. Chan? I read a bunch of the posts a couple weeks ago and you guys seem like a nice (and active) group of people.  I'm sure I'll need the extra support after the surgery. I have gone through most of my pre-op testing including my upper endoscopy on Friday.  That was quite the experience.  Of all the tests, the only problem I've been diagnosed with so far is a mild case of sleep apnea.  I've already contacted Dr. E's office and they say I will need a CPAP for the surgery.  This kind of bothers me because the sleep apnea guy said my case was so mild that he didn't think I needed one.  I'm hoping to rent one if that's possible. I don't plan to post too much before my surgery but will certainly be checking in a lot afterwards!  I will, however, check in to read any responses to this post. --Eric

Thanks!  I have already found a bunch of useful info.  Since most of my pre-op testing is complete, I'm going to start focusing on what brands/flavors of protien drinks I might like.  I've used my dietician's recommendations and this board for hints.  I just ordered some sample packs of Unjury this morning and will be visiting my local GNC one day this week for other brands.  I'm looking to at least try various flavors of Isopure, New Whey and Nectar.  From what I can tell, there's lots of people who like and hate each brand/flavor so I'll have to explore on my own.

Hi Eric. Welcome to the Maryland Board. As you can see we are a diverse but friendly bunch. If you look at my profile you will see where I am in the process of doing a taste test for protein drinks. I have been approved for surgery. I meet with my surgeon a week from tomorrow and it should get scheduled at that time. So I figured I would try out some different types.  Take care and good luck. With all these responses, I can see this is a friendly board!   Please let me know which of the protien drinks you like best!  I'm going to take a ride to GNC after work to see about getting some samples.

Hi Eric! Welcome 'aboard'!!!   Best wishes as your WLS journey continues.   \ I'm not sure how it is for 'banders' but with RNY-ers tastes change post op and some protein powders/drinks that we might have liked pre-op are nasty post-op and vice versa, so you might not want to go overboard purchasing anything in bulk. Hugs, Mo

I'll let you know about the "banders" post-op.   I just wanted to get a few samples from a few of the protein makers. That way I'll also some for immediately after the surgery and won't have to scramble.

You may not have any 'taste' issues post op.   I was fine with the protein, it was other things that just didn't taste right to me for quite a while post op!

Best wishes for an uneventful sugery and a very speedy recovery.

Hugs, Mo

Neighbor is right.  It's nice to see somebody in SoMD!!  It's funny because now that I'm working towards the surgery, I've met a couple people who have had it done.  I'm really excited about the surgery and plan to remain active on this board.  I'm sure I'll need it.
