Hi, ya'll
I'm the new kid here. I went to see Dr. Michael Schweitzer at JHU Bayview on Monday, and we're now in the process of gathering the stuff for my insurance approval. My insuror is GEHA, as I'm a fed. I'm almost 50 years old and need to lose about 140 lbs. I'm looking forward to culling the collective wisdom here.
I came into the appointment thinking a lap band because of the lower rate of complications. Dr. Schweitzer told me that an RNY is a better option for me because I'm Type II, and apparently, it has a better track record for helping folks like me get to sub-diabetic glucose levels quickly. I don't understand the science of that, but if someone knows why, please explain.
Anyway, he's the doc (and quite the expert from what I've read) and I'll probably defer to him. He wants me to talk it over with my primary and the nutritionist.

I was going to have a lapband as well, but had lap RNY instead for similar reasoning. I don't know the science of it. I do know that my Type2 diabetes is resolved. My blood sugars do not go above 105 after eating. In fact, I just donated all of my diabetes supplies to a friend with lousy insurance.
Welcome to the forum.

The love of my OH Family has me humbled!!!!
Welcome Edie! And good luck in your journey. I am a fed also, but I have the BCBS PPO. I was able to go through Sinai and am very pleased with their program. I went into my initial consult thinking lap band for the same reason you stated. But once I talked to my surgeon, given my generally good health, age (37) and that I had 150 to lose, we decided on the bypass. One of the things we talked about is that with bypass the loss is a little more drastic and faster. Whatever procedure you decide on, best of luck with your journey!
