I have been reading some post's and im kind of confused..In your opinion is it better to go to your PCP and have them refer you for the surgery? or Is it better to go to a surgeon and have them recommend the surgery and go back to your PCP and get a letter of approval? If you understand what im asking and would like to add more on that may be helpful information for that would be great. Thanks alot everyone!!!
Hello and welcome to the MD forum.
If you have an HMO you have to go through your primary physician first to get a referral. A surgeon can not see you without a referral becuase then you are responsible for the consultation fee.
If your insurance does not require any referrals than you can go to the surgeon and take it from there.
I have Aetna HMO.. I went to my PCP requested a referral and I went to have my consultation with the surgeon my insurance referred me to.
Good luck on your journey.
