MY WLS NOT WORKING.. Update

I posted earlier in the week and last week that I had originally lost 38 lbs since my surgery.  In the last 2 weeks, I have gained 10 lbs back.  Well.. I called my surgeon.  He is VERY concerned, and says that this should DEFINITELY not be happening.  He is also very bewildered, because I was losing so nicely at the beginning.  He asked me is my scale correct -- yes, it's brand new.  He asked me have I been adhering to an 800 calorie diet -- yes, I track it on fitday.com.  We're kind of at a standstill to figure out what is happening.  One of the ONLY things I can think is that I hadn't been drinking ALL of my water -- I mean, I drink water every day, but I KNOW I wasn't getting in 64 oz...  yesterday and today I really tried to improve on this. He says that one of the complications of this surgery is that your staple line can come undone, and your pouch can fuse back to your old stomach.  But he says usually if that happens -- there is a LOT of pain.  But I have none.  But, we are going to do an endoscopy anyways, to rule that out. I just feel very depressed because I went through so much to get this approved.. and I have only lost 26 lbs total -- and it's been 6 weeks -- I'm just praying I don't gain anymore weight.. I wouldn't be able to bear it.  All of this work, seems like for nothing. Has any of this happened to anyone else???? The most bewildering part of all of this is -- if you compare what I WAS eating before the surgery to what I AM eating now -- I should be losing weight, just on quantity alone.  AND, everyone tells me it looks like I'm still losing weight.. but it's not showing on the scale. I am wondering WHY I ever went through all of this... for a possible 26 lb loss?!??!  I've done that before on Atkins, or diet pills.  UGGGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Kelly, I am sorry you have gained 10 pounds.  It can be attributed to water weight gain.  I have noticed that the more I drink my fluids the more I lose and the less I drink I retain a lot of water and gain 2 to 3 pounds in a day or two.   Can your thyroid get tested to see if it is out of whack? I know they must have tested that prior to surgery but you never know right? Also I am sorry to ask a personal question but did you have your period recently.  I always gain water when I get my period. I am praying that all is fine and that it is only a minor water gain and then you can be right back on track.   By the way are you keeping your carbs down and protein up?  When I keep my carbs down I lose and when I don't  I gain also and go on a stall.  Please stay positive.  I am glad that your doctor is willing to do the endoscopy to make sure all is ok in there. Please keep us posted. hugs,

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

Yeah, I am trying to drink more.  Hopefully, this will help.  My surgeon also wants me to get my thyroid tested again, so I guess that will be sometime next week. I haven't had my period.. but my periods are always VERY irregular (I have gone 7-8 months at times without a period -- the weight loss was supposed to help with this, according to my GYN).  I thought it was coming, because I was having cramping.. but no such luck.  I have been staying up on protein and down on carbs.. I have been watching/reading labels very religiously lately. Thanks for your kind words.. I will let everyone know if they find out anything. P.S... I'm still too depressed to change my weight ticker.. :(  it still says 38 lbs..

Kelly, I am sorry I am just getting to your reply.  I wonder since you are so irregular and you felt as if your period was coming and it didn't if that is all the water weight gain.   Your GYN can give you meds to bring it on and hoepfully that will help.   You are doing everything right so hopefully your doctor can figure out if your thyroid is causing this or your irregular cycle.   Don't get depressed sweetie with some tweaking of the meds and stuff you will be back on track soon. Big hugs to you.

Cira gave some great advice, to me on my post and in here to you. Keep positive is the main thing. I was worry about gaining one pound and my surgery was a week after yours. I think you should try to get in the liquids and just continue to walk or lightly work out. That is all I can say. I hope you be back on the losing side soon honey!!

Yeah, Cira is always really helpful! I have been working out EVERYDAY on my eliptical trainer.. but it just feels like all of my effort is for nothing.. just VERY depressing.  I almost feel like giving up and going back to the old me... then I realize I have already done so much for this.. I've GOT to continue... I just don't know where to go from here.

Don't give up. It sounds like your surgeon is going to stick in there with you and see what is going on! I'm sure its hard, but hang in there! I will pray for you!

Kelly, I'm really sorry that you're having to deal with this.  Keep trying to find a solution that works best for you.  I truly believe that things will kick in.  I feel you're still a new post-op, and your body is trying to work out the kinks.  Please keep us updated on the tests.  Hang in there, and try not to get down.   TraciL

I would certainly be concerned as well. At least your doc is going to get to the bottom of this right away.  I have one question others havne't asked. Have you measureed yourself? Are you turning the fat into muscle? Muscle is much more dense than fat and weighs more. Just an idea. Oh- one other- could you be pregnant? Hugs,

I haven't measured.. which I guess I should have been doing.  As for being pregnant -- I thought of that already, and did a home test.  Luckily, I was not. Thanks!
