My First Sushi!!

I got turned on to sushi about a year ago, and have been addicted since.  Of course, quite a few months ago I could go to the sushi buffet in Ellicott City and a ton of it!    But after surgery always worried about the rice issue.  I have read quite a few posts on here about it, some say sushi rice does not swell as much as regular white rice, many had mentioned eating it. So today I got a tuna roll for lunch (190 cal/24 g protein for the whole thing) and ate 4 of the 6 pieces.   So 128 calories and 16 g of protein for lunch,  and it was SO good!!   I am fully satisfied and so far, it is being tolerated well! :) :)

Sounds good... So where do you get good Sushi in Woodlawn????  :-) I never had trouble with rice.   Bread and thin pasta, on the other hand, make me feel horrible. I did not eat much Sushi before...mostly because it seemed to be hit or miss with taste.   But now that my tastes have changed...who knows...I might really like it. Thanks for the tip...

Every morning in Africa , a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa , a lion wakes up. It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

I don't know where to get good sushi in Woodlawn - I was off work today to have my 3 month post op labs drawn and to go to  my son's 4th grade program at school.  I got today's at North China in Westminster (by the Giant).  The buffet that I was talking about is in Ellicott City on 40 - it is a huge sushi bar with the widest variety you could ever imagine!  But when you can only eat 4 pieces it isn't quite worth it! ;)

Be VERY careful of the seaweed wrapper.  I LOVE my sushi, but have had a piece of the seaweed get stuck or cover my stoma before.  Got SO sick.  Sashimi is perfect for me.  Just rice and protein.  Also, there is sugar in the rice, but probably not enough to affect you.  Otherwise EAT UP!  It's SO good and good for us!

Heather, just out of curiosity (because I have been fine since I ate my sushi) what happened when the seaweed wrapper got stuck over your stoma?  What were the symptoms, and how did it resolve (and how long did it take).

I immediately had pain and a VERY full feeling WAY before I should have.  I think it was after just 3 pieces of sushi and I had practically no fluid in my band at that point.  I did what I had to do to get it out and that was throw up.  I tried to wait it out, but it was no use.  I drank some water to help lubricate it and I threw up about 3 times (nothing violent or anything) and finally felt better after an hour or so.  Had to do liquids the rest of the day and next morning.  I still love my sushi, I just take greater care when it comes to the seaweed or just avoid it all together.  I made a sushi salad one day.  It was imitation crab, avacado, cucumber and some light mayo mixed together.  VERY yummy.  I have to avoid the seaweed salad like the plague too.  Just like sauerkraut my tummy can't handle it because I can't chew it up enough.

OK...for those of us that are Sushi Challenged...what the heck is Sashimi??? Geeez...I thought I was just going to have to learn how to eat the foods I used to...not learn a new language!  :-) Thanks, Dave

Dave, Sashimi is either just the fish or usually it is the fish (or whatever - shrimp, egg, octopus, etc) on top of an oblong ball of rice, mainly with some wasabi rubbed in between the two.  YUM!

Oh yummmmm, I hadn't thought about still being able to eat sushi. Good to hear its at least a possibility. I go to Sushi Hana in Towson  or San Sushi in Timonium. Both great choices.  Mark

I love sushi also, but the rice has kept me away. I just might check out the sushi place in owings mills next to Carabou Coffee next time I am there.
