Sorry I haven't been around for a couple of weeks, my birthdday trip to Vegas was a blast and I can't remember having such a good time away from home.  That was 2 weeks ago - yesterday I wound up at the ER at Bayview.  I was having a severe pain on my left side under the ribs and I called my surgeons office and since it was a Friday afternoon I was told to go to the ER.  After many hours, a sonogram and a cat scan showed I have a umbilical hernia.  It is probably the result of the surgery weakening the tissue.  I seem to remember some posts about hernias and I am hoping someone out there can shed some light/experience with this pesky problem.  I am scheduled to see my doctor on Monday morning and I am probably going to have to go for surgery.  That is the last thing I want to do, but the pain is awful.  Please help!!!

Linda, I usually also post on the DS forum. Some of those individuals have had hernias and they are all quick to post. I can't really tell but it sounds like you had the RNY, but there is no reason you can't post on the DS board. You will get fast good information. Hope you feel better soon. Jo

I had the same thing happen to me before Christmas of 2006.  I was first diagnose with the hernia after my weight lose surgey. Dr Avarbach said he repaired it but that it will come back again and two years later I was in the worst pain in my life. I didn't realize I had a hernia before the surgery because all my weight was in the front of me, but once I lost the weight I could actully see it. It was moving up and down when it would get inflamed. I had it repaired with a mess which only took about an hour and was out of work for about a week. It's a outpatient thing and I had it done at St Agnes.  I hope all goes well for you. I will kept you in my prayers.

Hi Linda, I haven't had the wls surgery yet, but it was an umbilical hernia that really convinced me to persue the surgery. I had no pain fortunately, but the intestinal bulge just below my belly button was quite unnerving. I had what was supposed to be laproscopic surgery back in November. The anesthesiologist told me my weight worried him and I would be given an airway before the surgery. Turns out the tear was more severe than first thought and laproscopy wasn't an option. The surgeon used mesh and hundreds of stitches to make the repair as strong as possible, but he had mentioned the possibility of reoccurence and that losing weight would lessen the chances. I woke up about 3 hours later and went home soon after with no complications.  I hope this is helpful, Mark
