Pre Op, protien diet question???

Hi, i'm pre-op.  Going through my 6 month supervised diet requirement.  My dietician has explained that I should increase my protein.  I know I consume too many carbs.  But she explained that eating the protien part of my meal first, then the veg/fruit, then the carb last will help my fullness feeling.  Keep me satisfied longer, sustained.  Well i'm not noticing it, and still feel a carb withdrawal.  I have been doing this for 5 weeks now.  I guess thats not that long since i've led years of carbaholism.  Any suggestions????  Thanks!

Do you drink with your meal? Post op you don't drink for at least 30 minutes following your meal. Also, are you chewing slowly and taking your time between bites? That seem to help also. Post op you won't be albe to eat more than the protein. :)

Hi Kelly - I'll echo everything Aime said.  Pre-op, for breakfast I would have a protein drink (I used and still use EAS Advant Edge ready to drink protein shakes in French Vanilla as creamer in my coffee).  Then as a snack, I would have some almonds or some string cheese; lunch was usually a frozen diet meal (300 or less calories), plus a salad or some veggies, dinner was usually something sensible - again, a meat and a salad or veggies, and if I snacked in the evening, it was usually s/f popsicles.  I know it's hard, but it does get easier, and it's so worth it in the end.

Just so you know, once you're post-op and the further out you get, you'll be able to eat more carbs - not everyone shares an intolerance for sweets/carbs/fat.  So my advice?  DO NOT OPEN THE BAD CARB DOOR POST-OP - CARBS ARE EVIL!  CARBS BEGET CARBS AND YOU'LL JUST WANT MORE!!! Drink lots of water, too - I always did pre-op, but now, at almost 2 years post-op, I drink anywhere between 140-200 oz. of water (w/Crystal Light) every day. Hope this helps!  Feel free to ask any questions or post any concerns you have! Teresa (Tia)

140 to 200 oz of fluids a day?????  Holy Cow Tia...you must be in the bathroom most of your life!!!!

Even on my best day, I can't do more than about 90oz.   And then I am up half the night going to the bathroom.   Yikes... Dave

Every morning in Africa , a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa , a lion wakes up. It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

Hi Dave!! You'd think I'd be a peeing machine, wouldn't you??  But actually, I go about every hour here at work, because that's where I drink the majority of everything, and then it slows down once I'm home.  I don't usually wake up during the night, though, I sleep like the dead!

Oh, did I mention that all tha****er/Crystal Light is in addition to the 2-3 BIG iced coffees and my usual pre-bed cup of hot tea??

Obviously, the further out I got, I was able to chug water, so it gets easier!

Have a good day!

Tia

Goodness gracious lady 140-200 oz a day I am still trying to get 50 ounces.   Today with the heat I felt like I was getting dehydrated.  I am trying so hard and it is such a big problems at times. I am praying it gets easier soon.

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

In addition to the other suggestions, I found that I was more successful if I dramatically cut the carbs during my pre-op dieting.  It seemed that ANY carbs I ate wanted company!  So I tried to avoid them as much as possible.  And any that I did eat were of the high-fiber kind -- like whole wheat bread and (I confess) crackers.  After a couple of weeks, I found the carb craving decreased.  If that isnt happening in your case, keep a very detailed food diary, including portions and times, and bring that to your next nutritionist appointment.  She might be able to figure out what is the problem.   But dont be too hard on yourself.  If you could have lost all your excess weight without the surgery, you would have already!  What they are really trying to do now is to establish successful eating patterns for the rest of your life.
