Gained Weight???

Okay, despite my best efforts to not step on the scale everyday.. I have been.  And in the last week, it says I have gained between 5-7 lbs back???  How could this be? I WAS at 290, and now my scale says I am either 295 or 297?!?! I have been trying to get all of my protein in, and drink lots of water -- but I have not been to a nutritionist yet to get a full write up of what I should eat. Also -- I feel like I can eat way too much.  I know a lot of people feel this way.. but the other day my family went to chic-fil-a.  I got a chicken sandwich, minus the bun -- I was able to eat the entire piece of chicken, and wasn't COMPLETELY stuffed -- just satisfied.  I am only 5 weeks out.  I just think that is a lot?!  Tonight, I had about 4 small bites of steak, 3 shrimp, and a small amount of fruit. I guess I just need some confirmation that I am doing this right. Thanks for your input, as always! Kelly G.

Umm Kelly...didn't your doc have you consult with a nut prior to surgery?  Anyway....I have the John Hopkins discharge info for Rny surgery if you want it.... (They gave it to me by accident) but it has some good ideas/tips... I could fax it or mail a copy...just let me know... BTW i was on mushy foods for four weeks then got to progress to soft foods... (RNY patients follow a similar diet but the amounts are far smaller and more frequently)

(Chicken isn't really a soft food)

FYI, it's on the website, too: http://www.hopkinsbayview.org/bariatrics/documents.html. However, I think you should call your doctor and see if the office can recommend a nutritionist!

Kelly,

You should definitely see a nutritionist to get on a set program.  If your insurance will cover it, I recommend Ashli Greenwald at Johns Hopkins Bayview.  She is awesome, but your surgeon may recommend someone that typically sees his patients. Also, just remember that EVERY PATIENT IS DIFFERENT.  What we are given to go by is a guideline, but some of us progress quicker than others.  Being 5 weeks out, you probably shouldn't be able to eat a whole chicken breast, but I've had a few Chick-fil-a breasts, and they're nothing to sneeze at... I just hope you're chewing REALLY GOOD at 5 weeks out! I did terrible with the pureed diet that I should have been on for the first 4 weeks.  I was told to go to soft foods after a week, and I was eating more solid foods by 4-5 weeks.  Although, I couldn't tolerate much of anything, so I still practically lived off of Dannon NF Yogurt and Del Monte Fruit Naturals fruit cups along with my protein shakes.

Good luck!

Hi Kelly Your doc should of sent you to your nut before your surgery to let you know the things you are supposed to eat and when to start something new. I would call nd make that appointment today. % weeks out i was eating soft foods like shrimp no meas and not a whole chicken but some. You may need to be getting more protein drinks in. Hi Kelly, I agree with everyone else, see a NUT as soon as you can.  Both my sister and I had the same surgery, about 5 months apart.  She has always been able to eat more than me and doesn't have the same reactions to carbs/sugar that I have had.  We are all different.  However, I do think being able to eat that much chicken at one time is a lot for 5 weeks out.  I couldn't eat more than 1/2 of an atkins size protein bar or about 1 ounce of chicken at 5 weeks out.  Still, if you are chewing well and not feeling sick then you are fine.  My sister measures all of her food strictly.  Since she doesn't feel as full as quickly as others, she makes sure she measures and sticks to those amounts very carefully.  Your NUT can tell you how many ounces of food you should be able to eat right now.  Keep in mind that the softer the food the more you can eat.  Salads, anything that is really moist or soupy and such you will be able to eat more of.  Jus****ch the carbs/sugars.  Don't drink with your meals.  This is key since you don't want to fill up on fluid and not get enough protein.  On the flip side of that you also don't want to "flush" the food you are eating out of your pouch too quickly.   It can be a game of try and try again.  don't sweat the weight gain too much.  Our bodies can really trick us at times.  Have you had extra salt in your foods?  That always causes me to see 3 lbs up on the scale.  By the way, I still weigh myself nearly every day.  It keeps me honest! Hugs, Robin
