The Cow in Reisterstown...Part II

Caryn gave away my secret spot (although I have even blogged about it so it really is not secret)....so I will give you a little more info on the yogurt. Mike, the owner pulled out the mix he uses for it when I asked him about it. It has 9 calories per fluid oz. It has no fat and no sugar. It has less than 1 carb and only a trace of protein per fluid oz. We then did a "melt" test. I got a level-to-the-top kids cup ($2). Just ask them for a lid and they won't over fill it. Melted, we came up with 5fl oz. Really it was 4.7 but I rounded up. Bottom line, the entire treat is 45cals, no fat, not sugar, 5 carbs and about 1.5 g of protein. Not bad for a wonderful fozen treat. He always has it in chocolate and switches between vanilla and NY Cheesecake (which just tastes more like vanilla custard than anything I have tasted). I treat myself, once a week to this! Sorry Cira, this is a one store operation. He has really done a nice job with this shop. Be warned though...there is no inside. There are limited benches outside and on warm evening (and even not so warm evenings) there are lines. But the lines move reasonably quickly. They also have wonderful gelatis (an italian ice/frozen custard combination) for those not dealing with our way of eating. He has about 50 flavors of Italian ice and the most wonderful frozen custard (soft ice cream you have ever tasted)...but leave those for the kiddies! Now...the fun part. I will be bringing a telescope to The Cow a couple of times a month this summer and fall. The idea is let anyone who shows up take a look at a bright (because of the street lights) celestial object through a real (big) telescope. He will have a schedule on the window in his shop. I will also post it here. Good yogurt...a view of the heavens...and an old "Main Street" feel. Could be a fun summer evening with the family. Dave

Well...this is a hike for you. You might want to plan this trip for a nice Saturday or Sunday. It is located on Main Street in Reisterstown. My wife works on Vetrans Hwy in Millersville (about the closest I can relate to Odenton)....and it takes her about 40 minutes to get home. So you are looking at about 45 minutes, one way, or so. The quickest way would be to make your way to 695 headed towards Towson. You would get off at exit 19 (795). It only goes North from the beltway. Follow that to the first exit for Franklin Blvd....about 7 miles from the beltway. Follow Franklin Blvd to Reisterstown Road (about 1/2 mile (second red ligh). Turn left onto Reisterstown Road (Rt 140). After you go through the 3rd redlight (about a mile) the road will go from 4 lanes to 2. This is where Main street starts. You will find as you get closer to The Cow you will see small antique shops and the houses will get older and older! You will be on a long straight stretch of road. At the end of the straight stretch...on the right is The Cow. Big whit sigh with red letters . The sign looks like a fence. If you see the Middle School on the left, you have gone too far by about 100 feet. You won't miss it. Once you get your yogurt, take a walk back up Main street and look in some of the little shops. Some neat stuff if you like antiques and crafy little boutiques. Finally, on June 9th, during the day, they are having some sort of street Jazz festival. I don't know much about it as they have just started advertising...but it could be a nice day along that part of town. Dave

Thanks Dave for the directions!  I will definitely make it out there some day soon.  I went to friendly's and had the sugar free rasberry swirl frozen yogurt and I did not like it.  I am looking forward to try the cow.  ;-) Cira

I can take you and the kids there one day or evening Cira. Reisterstown is my old stomping grounds. I've known about the Cow for awhile as well. Used to go there after a trip to the library with the boys.

Dave, you might have hit on something here! Sounds like a wonderful day. Let us know your schedule with the telescope. I might trek on up that way. TraciL

Dave, I was walking around the festival for a guy that looked like you but skinnier! I saw your flyer up at The Cow, but when we left (around 4) it was looking pretty much like rain, and I was with my brother and his family. Thanks for the nutritional rundown - there is a place in Westminster called Hoffmans - they make the world's best homemade icecream, and have a sugar free/ fat free version. I used their nutritional info as a benchmark and counted it as 60 calories, for 1/2 of the kiddie cup. And I had the chocolate/cheesecake swirl and was about as close to heavan as I have been since March 6th!! The best part of the day was that I was walking around smelling funnel cakes and kettle corn, pit beef and such - and honest ENJOYED the smells WITHOUT even wanting the foods in the least! Remembering Dave's secret of the icecream was just and added treat!

Hey guys, I come in from Cumberland to visit my brother in Owings Mills every couple of weekends. Maybe we could all meet at the COW. Dave, pick a good weekend and lets see if we can make it happen. Thanks. Jo
