hi gary, i am 43 yrs old and on ssd but not for the obesity but i guess it depends on what your limitations are. as for me mine started as tarsol tunnel in the ankles. i had high blood pressure before that and they told me that it wasn't a cause to be on ssd. i was denied the first time which i think everyone is. but i wrote a reconsideration letter and they accepted it. as time went on i developed more health problems because of my weight. diabetes, and alot of problems with my back. now i am going through the testing process of getting surgery. and i am hoping medicare and medicaid will accept me. i figure they will unless they want to pay for all the medication i am taking for the rest of my life. i don't know if this helps any but i wish you luck in whatever you decide to do. i know applying for ssd is a long process but like this surgery, it will be worth it in the end. good luck , tammy

Social Security has very stringent policies and guidelines as to who is "disabled" by their definition. Every program defines it in their own way (Veterans, workman's comp, private insurance companies) Soc Sec is a total, permanent disability program-for folks who cannot do any type of work activity at all based on their impairment(s), age, education, and work experience. It is a very common misconception that everyone gets denied the first time they apply - and it is incorrect. Many people are denied because they just don't meet the requirements. As time passes, their conditions worsen or they age, and often times they are allowed at later steps in the process because of that. There is not a rule specific to obesity right now, but morbid obesity combined with othter impairments could render someone disabled. It depends what the other impairments are, how they respond to treatment (that the patient is following), and how the person is functionally limited.
