Because I'd been seeing postings on this board and a few others about eating mashed potatoes so soon after surgery, I emailed Sloane and asked her about it and she replied that she doesn't recommend eating those until 5-6 months after the surgery. So beware.

Hi Nadine, mashed potatoes are my life saver and I am not willing to give it up. lol I use the instant one and I use 1% milk to make it. I only eat about 2 tablespoons and I don't eat it everyday. I don't think that can really harm me. Thanks for letting me know. Cira

Every doctor is different. The first food I was allowed when I got to the mushy stuff WAS mashed potatoes. I was so excited when I left the doc's office after my 10 day check up and headed to KFC to get mashed taters that I could 'chew'.

Thats funny how each doc is diferent. After a week my doc said i could do mashed potatoes with fat free cheese melted on top. I lived off that stuff. Did they say why? Just curious

Kelly, No she didn't say why. I'm not a big mashed potatoes fan -- even as a kid I wasn't so it's no big deal to me. I just wondered since people on different boards where saying they were eating them. But you know er'body can't cook mashed potatoes, they could be undercooked and undermashed -- probably afraid a lump will get caught in the throat. I'm eating non-spicy chili -- sometimes -- Louisiana Girl gotta have a lil hot sauce every once in awhile

Sloane is most likely warning about mashed potatoes because of the carb content. I can't eat them. I will dump on them in a heart beat.

Hi Nadine, I know Dr Schweitzer allows mashed potatoes as part of the pureed/soft food stage of the diet which has been a life saver for me. It's amazing how all of our Doctors vary in their post op diet plans and allowances.

I was given mashed potatoes in the hospital on the third day. Enjoyed just the initial one bite that I could swallow. I still remember leaving the rest of the heaping mound on my tray. I still find it a comforting and fulfilling but consume only in a small amount. I make it with low fat milk and cheese. Every doc is definitely different, Leaving for my week in Ohio, Adrienne
