Hello everyone, you Lovely Ladies and Gents. I start my liquid diet on this sunday(2 1/2 weeks before surgery) It is many reasons why my Dr. requested I do this. I am ok with it. My questions to you all is....... Was it hard to commit to it? What did you drink? Did you continue with these same liquids after surgery. I know everyone is different, just wanted more info for my swelling head!!

Wow.. I haven't been told about that yet. I guess every surgeon is different. Mine hasn't mentioned it yet, and my surgery is "scheduled" for 4/25. You're going to GW, right? I just bought some Atkins Advantage Carb control drinks, which are actually pretty good, and they have 20 grams of protein, and 2 carbs.. so I guess that is good, but I haven't been told what my parameters of my food are going to be after the surgery.. I'm all too new at this. Good luck!!!! Kelly G.

Yvette, I did not have to do this! Why, I don't know - very large, very fatty liver, etc. The only advice I have is to stay busy, keep your mind on other things besides the food calling your name, and when all else fails - use your feet to vacate the area! Change of location is always good. I still have to use these coping skills at over 2 years out. The food demons are still there, and you know you always want what is bad. I have no doubt that it will be hard, but your optimistic attitude will help with the battle. My choice of protein drink has always been Carnation Instant Breakfast, no added sugar. Milk was not my friend for several months after surgery, but at some point I was once again able to tolerate it. Keep the faith, and keep your goal in mind. Remember, after surgery, your allies will be the "tool" and it's signals and higher self esteem. Quite the combination to help fight our disease and succeed. Best of luck! TraciL

I am so glad I didn't have to do a liquid diet prior to surgery. I expect that drinking liquids that appear more filling would be helpful. Milk based or the protein shakes. I would drink them slowly so that the full feeling lasts longer. That will also help you learn to sip, sip, sip for after surgery. I like the idea of moving your feet. Get up and walk. Do something else? Got to reteach that old brain what you really want instead of food. Best of luck, Aime

Hey Yvette, My surgeon did not require it either. But I see a lot that do. I was just asked to start eating as if I was a year out. The key to all the pre-op dieting though is to shrink the liver and make the surgery easier for the Dr and for you. If they can get in and do the work without too much trouble then your recovery will be much easier. As for post-op, I was supposed to be on a liquid diet for 10 days then switch over to pureed food. But I was doing very well and at one week the Dr. said to start the puree phase. At a month out, I am now starting to transition to real foods...but very very slowly. The good thing about the liquid diet is that you will start seeing weight loss right away. Also remember that this is not supposed to be some sort of torture. It is a way to kick start the entire process. Your journey will begin tomorrow. Your surgery is just a stop on that journey. Best of luck and stick with it. The better you are before the surgery the better your chances of an uneventful experience. Dave
