Saying Farewell To a Friend...
I wrote this a few days back in my blog after a real heart to heart with my wife. A few folks have asked that I post it publicly...so here you go.
From my blog:
------------------------------------
With due respect to my wife, family and real friends, I will be saying goodbye to an old friend soon.
My friend has been there for me as long as I can remember.
When I was sad, she would put an arm over my shoulder and calm me down.
When I was angry, she would come over and let the steam release slowly so no one got hurt.
When I was bored I could always give her a call. She would hang out and help me get through the hours.
If I was sick she could always cheer me up. When I was depressed or just plain grumpy....there she was.
And not only through the bad times. She was always there during the good times. She was there at all the big events in my life. In fact, she played a large role with the whole family at holiday times.
The relationship was always plutonic. There could never be anything more than that!
For all of this, my friend...I say thank you. I probably would not be the person I am today without you.
But on next Thursday, I am doing something that will help me stand on my own. You will still be in my life but you will need to take a different role.
No longer will you be my rock. No longer can I count on you to solve my problems. No longer will I allow you keep me on the couch.
The time has come to change your purpose in my life. If I could cut you out of my life completely...I would. Heck that is how I separated my self from nicotine. It is always easier to make a clean break, but in this case I can't do it an continue on.
So as I prepare for surgery and spend my last few days in your comfort, I just want you to remember that while I let you get me into this, it is still me that is in control. Even if it takes such drastic measures as surgery to liberate me from you.
From now on, I will simply rely on you to keep me alive and healthy. This is your true life's purpose anyway. I will put it to my real friends to support me.
Take care my dear friend "food".
Be careful who you hang out with and how you effect them. I realize that there will always be those that turn to your comforts and I, myself, will miss them greatly...but I really want to see my children grow up.
Your buddy,
Dave
