Eating the right foods

Hello Everyone: I will be having my surgery on March 29. What I am really concerned with is my diet the first month. What type of foods do you eat? According to the materials I read, pureed food will be my meal for approximately a month and then onto soft foods. I am curious if anyone have any recipes or suggestions that might help. Thanks. P.S. You all are such wonderful people to talk to because you give a lot of suggestions/ideas and you care about the next person.

Hi Helice Every doctor has different ideas on what his/her patients should be eating and for what length of time after surgery. I never really pureed things .. I ate soft stuff .. cottage cheese, yogurt, protein drinks, mashed potatoes, etc. I am sure that that you will get a lot of ideas from the others on here. Best wishes as your WLS journey continues. Hugs, Mo

I agree with Mo. Your doctor will guide you in the foods to eat. I ate and actually still eat lots of cream soups, protein shakes, puddings w/protein, and jellos at first. Best of luck! Aime

Hi Helice, Congrats on your upcoming surgery! My initial diet was pretty typical. I was on clear liquids for 3 days, then onto creamy soups and anything that was the consistency to go through a straw for the next 1.5 weeks. Then I went to soft foods. I didn't puree anything, I simply ate stuff that was soft already. I didn't do mashed potatoes or other soft carb foods cuz my doc very strongly oppossed them. I did a lot of cheese, cottage cheese, protein drinks (but don't really care for them). There is a book by Susan Marie Leach, Before & After WLS. (its advertised on this site a lot, on the main board). She has some really good protein drink recipes in there. My favorite is the peanut butter & banana, cookies n cream and the orange julius one. Those will really help you if you can at all tolerate them. I ate a lot of soup, cream of wheat, runny grits and runny Weight control oatmeal as well. Although the grits did not do well with me, got stuck and I have only had them one time since then. Are you seeing or have you seen a nutritionist? We have a great program at Walter Reed that includes regular visits with the nutritionist and they have a booklet they give WLS patients for how and what to eat the first 2-3 months after surgery. Maybe your NUT (affectionally) has something similar. I wish you all the best and great success! Hugs, Robin
