Hi, I am very new to this site and wanted to know if anyone out there had had this surgery and became pregnant after. I lost about 70lbs in 8months and then realized that I'm pregnant. I need to know how safe is it to be pregnant with the lap band still in place. I have searched everywhere, but can't seem to find any help. If anyone can give me any answers please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected]. Thanks

Hi Michelle and welcome o the site. Congratulations also. I do not have the lapband so I am not sure what the risks (if there are any) are. You may want to call your surgeon or primary doctor and ask them. Some one may give you a answer on here. I know my surgeon told me to wait a year before trying to get pregnant and that it has happened sooner for other patients and it's hard but they have had succesful pregnancy's. My doc only does RNY so I am not sure if it was meant for all bypass patients whichever style you choose. Well Congrats again and take care Kelly

Hi Michelle, I second Kelly's advice about speaking with your doctors, but you might also want to ask on the lapband forum here on OH. Best wishes! Hugs, Mo

You may want to try the lap band forum. I know that there are a few people that have gotten pregnant with the band good luck. Sweetness

Michelle, I'm one of the few in the Maryland forum WITH the band. Most of the people here have had RNY. It is VERY safe to be pregnant with the band. You will need to work with your surgeon (mine is Dr. Schweitzer at Bayview) to discuss what he/she wants to do. Typically some or all of your saline will need to be removed so that you can consume enough calories and nutrients for you AND the baby. By the way CONGRATULATIONS!!! I was pregnant earlier this year and had to cancel my surgery date, but I miscarried at 12 weeks. I got an IUD, then got my band. Once I get to goal I'll have the IUD removed and then try for another baby at that point. Good luck!
