When it rains it pours! (sorry so long)

Hi everyone. Well, it has been a very eventful 5 days in my house. Last week was a very busy week for all of us. It was show week at my daughters school for their Fall play. This is for Stephanie, the high schooler. Well, I was coordinating the dinner for the Cappies program. Cappies is a youth/peer critic program where students from other schools come to your school to critique your performance, stage, makeup/costumes etc. At the end of the school year they have their own awards show where students are chosen as "best actor/actress", etc. (sort of like a mini oscars/tonys) Well, when cappies come to your school you have to provide a room for them, usually decorated to go with the theme of the show and provide some food. Our school always does a full dinner. Well, I was doing the dinner. (Thankfully not decorating, that is not my forte, ) I took the day off of work so that I could give my full attention to the project and do a really good job and have plenty of time for any last minute things that typically come up with this kind of thing. I also thought I'd be really swift and schedule my daughter Meghan to see the dr. for some stomach cramps she's been having almost daily for the past month. I figured we would get that out of the way first thing in the AM and then get the rest of the things done for the dinner. WELL...good plans are sometimes tossed to the wind for some other roadblocks... :-tongue The dr. ordered x-ray's of Meg's stomach. First of all she was running about an hour behind in her appts. So we see her, get the x-rays and then wait. At 12:15 she comes out and says they need to do a CT scan but can't start that until the tech gets back from lunch in an hour. I explained that I couldn't stay, I had to have dinner ready for 60 people by 5:30pm. She said that was not advisable, that I really needed to wait for the test. I was a bit frustrated cuz my day is ticking away very quickly. I was already thinking of some corners that could be cut. Well, being the person I am, I felt like a very bad mom. Now, Meghan isn't having any cramps at this point, no fever, no sickness anywhere. But i listened to the doc and waited for the CT scan, which they did without contrast, to appease me I think. After the scan, the doc called Meg & I back to the room and told us that they had to transport Meghan to WRAMC by ambulance for emergency surgery on a bowel obstruction. Meghan began bawling, I felt horrible. We were scared, I know what dangers these things can be. I was still thinking "how can this be, she isn't hurting or anything" but I wouldn't argue with them. I got on the phone right away to get someone else to take over the dinner stuff because it's now clear that my plans are being changed. I did take a quick detour to the school to drop off the cash for the main entree. Met Meghan at the hospital and there the next doc took one look at her and said "this is not a bowel obstruction, she is not having any surgery." RELIEF!! Well, almost. Meghan did have a very full colon, so much that stuff wasn't passing thru normally, thus the cramps. But not emergency by any means. They gave us a bunch of very strong laxatives and we were home around 9:00pm. We missed Steph's opening night and the cappies dinner. But both went very well and so I was very relieved. The other parents that stepped up to help were wonderful. Meghan was "cleaned" out over the weekend, put on a liquid diet. That was the worst part I think. She is serious about her food so she was not a happy camper this weekend. Thankfully no surgery to recover from though! So far she hasn't had any cramps either. They are running lots of tests (blood work, upper GI) all to find out what caused this to happen. She has had stomach aches since she was an infant. The dr. thinks she may have a "kink" somewhere that causes pain when things move through. I am glad we are getting someone to take us seriously about her stomach pain. We have been sent home several times with antacids and tylenol. The doc that saw her at WRAMC said that the CT scan showed all the tums she's been eating the past several weeks. They aren't getting through either. So no more tums for her, at least until we know whats going on. To top off the weekend, my husbands car broke down. We are down to one car. He works in VA, I work in Baltimore and we live in Columbia, MD. This should be a lot of fun! I am waiting for the next thing to happen. Do these things come in threes? I hope not. I hope that some peace is on its way to my family for a few weeks anyway. I hope y'all had a wonderful weekend. I know a lot of folks are out this week and might not be posting much. I am glad to be at work, not having time to dwell on things can be a real blessing. We will continue to be busy the next few weeks, as most are this time of year. I'll be back to doing a lot of running since we only have the one car. But its not so bad. It'll be more time spent with my kids. Sometimes they get really chatting in the car. I enjoy listening to them talk about their lives. Talk to you all soon. Hugs, Robin

Oh Robin..big hugs to you!! Gosh, sounds like it was an eventful few days for you. I'm glad to hear that no surgery was needed for Meghan and glad to hear they're taking her pain seriously to figure out what it is. My one goddaughter had horrible pains as an infant and it continued (off and on) for several years. I don't know that they have it fully resolved even now, but at least they finally found the right doctor to enlist for a diagnosis. I'm sorry you missed Stephanie's dinner, but I'm glad to hear the other parents stepped up to make sure the dinner came off well Ouch on the car...doesn't it seem like when these kinds of things happen that they happen all at once? Just remember to take a deep breath and take a few minutes for yourself every so often Take Care, Terry

Thanks Terry. This too shall pass...that's what I keep repeating to myself. I do a lot of praying for strength and peace during times like these. Things will get better and settle down, eventually. We are hoping that a friend can help us with the car, might be able to save us hundreds of $$$. That would be a HUGE answer to prayer!! By the way, congrats on your jeans!!! That's awesome. I know you must be so happy. I read on another thread one time, a few months back, that someone recommended not getting plastics done until around 18 months post op because between 12-18 months the body shifts or something and a lot of folks report that they lose inches or clothes fit better even though they aren't losing any more weight. Then of course it improves again after plastics. Good for you. Yeah, this surgery is so worth it. I'll be praying for McMom and the family! Hugs, Robin

I am so glad that the only true discomfort Meghan had to experience was the clean out and liquid diet. Thank goodness there was no surgery. I have you in my thoughts and prayers. Aime

Gee, Robin, wish I had known about your car situation earlier. Marissa and Chaim were in this weekend and we were always together with two extra cars. Let me know if you need a ride either to or home from work. I am available most of the time. Hopefully Meg is feeling better and back in school. There is a great bunch of parents at the high school. Hugs, Adrienne

Thanks for the offer Adrienne. I'll keep it in mind, just in case. We have someone looking at the car tonight so maybe he will be able to fix it if we can buy the parts. Then it won't cost $800+. That would be great. Yes, the parents at the high school are great. I am doing thank you cards for them tonight. Meg is back at school. She hasn't had any cramps since this began so hopefully we are on the right track. Hugs, Robin
