Positive Post-op Story - Heart Warming
Today I was in CVS picking up a few things for my hair when I decided to get a price check on something from the pharmacy. The young man at the counter was very friendly. I noticed his first name and then the pharmacist called out his last name. I then recognized the fact that I had taught this kid math in 7th grade. I knew from our price check conversation that he did not have the faintest idea who I was so I thought I would have some fun.
Ah Mr. so-n-so you don't recognize me do you? He responded no. So I proceeded to have some more fun. That's interesting because I know you very well. I then laughed. He was looking concerned ---- what do you mean? Well I know you from such and such school. Oh really, he responds. So you still don't recognize me? He responded NO - no I do not. Do you remember your 7th grade teachers at such and such school? Yes -- yes I do. And you still do not recognize me? He continues to respond, No - no I do not. I was watching as he was trying to process through the list of all of his teachers who taught him that year. Do you remember your 7th grade math teacher -- yes - he replies yes I do. Still with out a clue --- I then asked him if he remembered her name. Yes -yes - Ms A ------ah ah MS A -- MS A is that you? He then jumps around the counter and gives me a great big hug. He was shocked.
I asked him if he remembered when I had the surgery the following year --he did. I said that I have lost about half of my self. He made me smile when he said -- oh no Ms A you look like you have lost wayyyy more than half of yourself. He then proceeded to show me a book of his photography that he just had published. He also told me that he was looking forward to going to college to study pharmacology. Oh, I said - you are going into field where you are going to use mathematics. We both laughed as we both knew how hard he struggled through 7th grade math.
Wow -- what a great moment running into a former student who is obviously doing well with great goals being set in his life. I had often thought that the main reason that I hadn't run into more of my students throughout the county was not so much that our paths haven't crossed but that I would not recognize them and they would not recognize me. Today I found out that my suspicions were true.
Just thought I'd post something positive. Life as a post-op is always rewarding - if one looks for the great moments. Is your cup half full or half-empty?
