Hi everyone, I am in the last month of a 6 month diet required by my insurance MDIPA Maryland, does anyone know if they require you to lose a certain amount of weight??? My surgery is being done by Dr DVR at GBMC and did he require you to loose weight before surgery. Also what type of liquid diet and clean out prep did you have to do with him. Thanks, Bobbie

Hi Bobbie, I didn't have DVR but I didn't want to not answer your post. I know Teresa E and some others on the board went to him. Teresa will be sort of MIA for the next several days but I'm guessing she might respond if she gets time to get online. Hopefully one of his other patients will see this and provide you some guidance based on their experience. I'm not sure that anyone can second guess what the insurance company is going to require Typically if the Dr. requires a liquid diet beforehand they require clear liquids. My Dr. didn't require the liquid diet preparation (although he did advise that I eat lightly the last few days before surgery). In addition, he did not require a clean-out prep either, but I went ahead and used Fleet phospho-soda. I figured since they were going to be cutting me on the inside that it was in my own best interest to make sure it was as clean as possible. It really wasn't too bad. I just took the small bottle and dumped it in a glass of sprite (my last soda by the way) and I chugged it down. It tastes kind of salty and somewhat citrusy. Best wishes to you as you pass an important milestone in your WLS journey! Take Care, Terry

Bobbie, MDIPA does not require any amount of weight loss. That is up to your doctor. The reason that MDIPA requires a 6 month physician supervised diet is that they want to see that you can be compliant with treatment afterward. Some people don't realize how closely you need to work with your doctor, nutritionist, etc. after the surgery. That certainly made me feel better about it. If I had been able to be successful with a diet, I wouldn't have needed the surgery!!! Marcia

Dr. von Reudin didn't require any weight loss amount from me. If your insurance approves the surgery after you have met all of their requirements, you will be scheduled. I am 2 weeks post op. Good luck.. Aime

Hi Bobbie - I didn't have to be on a diet either, but I started to cut back when I got my surgery date. Now that the surgery is only 10 days away, I am getting in some protein and getting my body in better shape. By the way, did you see the post about a support group for Baltimore? Hope you are interested! Linda

Hi Linda, Yes I saw the post about a new Balitmore group I live in Carroll County but would still try to make it. I will watch the board and see how goes it. Thanks, Bobbie
