RNY with Dr. Gandsas at Sinai
Hi, I had my surgery on July 11th of this year with Dr. Li, who works with Dr. G. Everyone is on an individual basis. There is a lot of tests and things that need to be done before you have your surgery, and sometimes the outcome of how long you have to wait for your surgery depends on your test results. I want to say that I filed my application in April? or there abouts and my original surgery date was set for August 8th, then someone got moved up so they moved me up as I had all my tests done. I started going to the pre op meetings in February.
I was asked to lose about 15lbs before surgery, but because of my body shape it wasn't imperative. If you carry the majority of your weight in your stomach, you may be mandated to lose a certain amount because of the instruments fitting properly. The main reason for losing weight is to shrink your liver due to the small instrument that has to hold it up. So everyone is required to lose as much as you can before your surgery. I think I lost about 7 or 8 lbs total before my surgery. You also must attend a nutrition class before hand, and change your eating habits as soon as you make the decision to have the surgery.
There is no smoking. That is definitely a big one. Anyway, if you would like to know anything else please feel free to email me.

I originally went to see Dr G and he required a weight loss before surgery. I went back to him and he wanted a bigger weight loss. I switched to Dr.Li in the same practice and her first words to me were "I'll operate on you". I did lose weight prior to surgery with the help of Nancy the nutritionist in the practice. I find Dr Li more personable than Dr G and their skill level is the same.
Good luck.
