there is a little candy shop that is family run on Wilkens Ave. it is called Rebs they make all there candys right there in the store. well i had surgery last week for ulcers and my sister in law got me a box of the sf assorted candies ,they were sooooo gooooood. they are like 8 dollars a lb but well worth it . so give them a try if you are looking for a really good peice of choclate.

Unfortunately, I cannot tolerate any of the sugar free candy with sugar alcohols in them (which most chocolates have). If they were sweetened with Splenda- I could probably try them.
What artificial sweetener does Rhebs use in their sugar free chocolates?
I can tolerate some sugar and I have recently found the Cocoa Via chocolate bars a real gem for my latent chocolate cravings. They have about 7-8 grams of sugar per bar- plus 2 grams protien and 2 grams fiber so they have some nutritional value (I am not concerned with the 3 grams of saturated fat in each bar although some have to watch this)
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed chocolate and its an extreme pleasure for me to have one of these small chocolate bars daily. Considerng I get little or no pleasure from most foods as a post op- these bars are a real delight
Hi Susan -
OMG!!! I LOVE RHEB'S!!! Their candy is #1 in my book - especially their dark chocolate vanilla butter creams. Heaven in a bite! They also have a stall in the Lexington Market, which, of course, I have to visit when I'm there.
That said, unfortunately, they don't make their s/f chocolates. I find that most s/f chocolates sold in the Baltimore area are by Asher. My pouch doesn't like Asher chocolates, but does fine on just one or two pieces of Rheb's.
It seems like sugar alcohols are less kind to me than a small quantity of real sugar. But it's all a matter of what our pouches say!
Glad I found another Rheb's devotee!!!
Take care,
Teresa
hi theresa,
Rhebs does make a sf choclate i just had them 2 weeks ago , my sister in law got me a box of the mixed one she asked the owners if they were made with splenda and they said they were. i ate them and had no problem at all they are 7 something for a 1lb box. maybe they do not sell them at the market just at there shop on wilkens ave. you could ask though any way they are sooooo goooood now that i am talking about them i think i will have to get a box tomorrow LOL. the bad thing is they do not make the truffels in sf. and they are my favorits let me know if you get a box and how you liked them

Hey Susan -
Sorry - I know Rheb's CARRIES s/f chocolates, but they don't make them. Last Christmas, which was my first one post-op, we bought a box, and I knew immediately that they were not a Rhebs-made product. After you posted, I was dying to know, I'd HOPED they might have started making their own, so I called the Wilkens Avenue store. The lady I spoke with said most of their s/f chocolates are made by Asher, with only a few, the nuts, the bark, etc., being made by Rheb's. She said their facility is not big enough to handle making the creams, caramels, truffles, etc., in s/f. She also confirmed what I originally thought, that most s/f chocolates in candy stores in the Baltimore area are supplied by Asher.
So I guess that's our answer! I still swear by their candy, and it's a personal preference - I'd still rather have a piece or two of Rheb's as opposed to Ashers. Rhebs' regular chocolates are about $12 a pound - a true bargain for this chocoholic!
Glad they're not making you sick - jus****ch those sugar alcohols - they can be evil!!!!
Have a great rest of the day,
Teresa
Hey Michelle -
Rheb's is located near St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore; they also have a stand in Lexington Market on Eutaw Street in Baltimore City; their website is www.rhebcandies.com. They've been in business for a loooonnnngggg time and is truly the best I've ever tasted, including the pricier brands, Godiva, Ghiradelli, etc.
As I said, they don't make all of their own s/f candies, but if you can handle a piece of real chocolate, all of it's fresh and all of it is sublime.
BTW, the lines are huge and slow moving near holidays, so be forewarned. We buy our Christmas chocolates the day after Thanksgiving, and our Easter chocolates about 3 weeks ahead of time.
Have a great weekend,
Teresa
