Is DS recognized by NIH?
My insurance EOB states that i have "coverage for the treatment of Morbid Obesity through a surgical method that is: 1) recognized by the NIH as effective for the long-term reversal of Morbid Obesity; and 2)consistent with guidelines approved by the NIH.
I been looking around on the internet and all i've found so far for approved methods is the RNY (which i guess i could settle for but not what i really want) and gastric banding (not wasting my time on that one.)
Does someone have any recent reports or something that show that NIH recognizes the DS?
Thanks......
Go to the NIH main website at www.nih.gov and type in the name of the surgery in the search box. You might also find information at www.niddk.nih.gov.

You have Optimum Choice Insurance. They cover the DS--as long as you meet the NIH guidelines.
Well, unfortunately i do meet the guidelines..... looking better all the time...
My previous PCP is 100% supportive of the surgery. However, she is not in the Optimum Choice network. If i want my surgery paid at 100%, I have to have a referral from a OC dr. I have an appt within someone on Thursday afternoon to start my 6 month weigh-ins.
Everyone cross your fingers......
