Hello!

I am 2 wks post op and have bad constipation!  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I am trying to drink lots of water, but this doesn't seem to be moving anything along.

Thanks!

I'm the constipation queen.  I had so many issue post op and even pre op to a smaller extent. I tried everything. I have hemmoroids and had a fissure at one point.

The magic solution for me is Restoralax. You can get it at any pharmacy or costco.  It's a powder I put in my coffee or what ever drink. No taste. I used it at the beginning and i didn't think it worked. What works now is I started twice a day for about 3 days then once a day. Even now I only have to take it a few times a week and I go everyday and easily. The not having to strain has healed the fissure too. no gas and no cramping at all. Isnt addictive and just pulls water into the bowel.

I am 10 weeks post op and deal with constipation as well. I take a stool softener(walmart brand) twice a day(one pill in am and one at supper) and occassionally take senekot if necessary. Some people use benefibre as well. I use lactalose for my son who suffers from chronic constipation due to his seizure meds.

Are you still on the post op liquid diet or have you tranistioned to solid foods? If on solids then I'd try increasing your fiber and fluid intake. Too much protein can also lead to constipation but I'd be suprised to hear of constipation if still on a liquid diet. Try more activity too - that helps.

I'd talk to your dietician.

Plain old prune juice works for me. There may be a fair amount of natural sugar in it, but I only have to use it once in a blue moon now. I have only found it sold in large bottles, so I split it up into smaller bottles (water bottles would work) and freeze them. Otherwise I was throwing it away because it sat too long in the fridge.

Thank you for your replies!

I am taking restorolax as my son also has constipation problems, and I had it in the cupboard!  I have never had any "issues" like this before, so it is kind of scary!  I am in phase 2 of the post op program, which is liquids, yogurt, cream soups, anything that is baby food consistancy without chunks.

I wasn't sure what I would be able to take for constipation, as it says in our post op instructions to take milk of magnesia, but I was unable to find it!

Thank you again for taking the time to reply!
