Hi I'm new to the bariatric program here, having only been accepted about a week ago. I'm at the top end of the criteria for age and BMI so am very happy to be on the list. Have started at Mike's suggestion tracking my food on MyfitnessPal. Interesting to discover that I am falling short on my caloric intake......need to increase protein and cut my salt. Now to get a start on recording regular exercise. Hopefully by the time I have my meetings with the professionals I will be a better place to make positive changes. I'm assuming I'm having the RNY I didn't realize till reading posts on here that the sleeve was an option. Who decides?
Speaking only about the Alberta program, I believe the decision is the patient's based upon what the program offers (I believe lap band is not an option in Alberta), any co-morbidities (such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, excessive BMI or age), the risks and limitations of the different types, and what the surgeon recommends. If you're having private bariatric surgery then there's costs as well.
So do your research, ask lots of questions, make your decision and sleep on it. I initially chose a VSG then changed my mind and decided on a RNY. After doing further research, rethought my decision and finally decided the VSG was best for me.
BTW, salt is really hard to limit unless you chose low sodium prepare foods (including most condiments), stop eating fast food and restaurant meals (some have low sodium selections), and throw away your salt shaker. I stopped (or cut down) the amount of salt in most recipes and stopped using it on eggs, veggies and... corn on the cob!
I'm Elizabeth and I started my journey almost 3 years ago. I was 347 and lost 47 pounds before surgery. I had my RNY surgery in Winnipeg on Nov.26, 2012 and now weigh 191 pounds. I have not had any complications and feel great! I'm getting small enough to share my daughter's clothes, unfortunately she lives in Edmonton and we don't get to see each other much. :( I'm very happy with my progress. I didn't get here by diet alone. I do exercise a lot, except for the past month, with holidays and all. I'll be back at the gym regularly starting this week. Welcome to all the newbees!
Hi Everyone!
I have been a member for a while and I check in here and there. I have not noticed much activity on the Manitoba forums for awhile so I am happy to see people posting again.
I had my referral sent in November 2012 to the MB program. I heard of my acceptance in March. I am awaiting some sort of contact from the clinic. They told me that if I do not hear from them within 1 year to call them and find out where I am on the list. I would like to feel like there is more that I can do other then wait! Great to know that a meet and greet is coming up. Maybe with others in the same boat the wait wont be so long.
welcome, this board goes in waves.some weeks lots of posts and others not so many.there have been lots of posts lately.
as for contacting the clinic, they are going through staffing changes right now and there is alot of confusion there.
please feel free to post any questions and we vets will try and help you as best we can
