Hey folks.

I just received my Roux-en-Y surgery date, August 12th.

I'm looking for some advice regarding EI:

  • When did you apply?
  • Were you approved, and if so...
  • When did you get your ROE?
  • When did you get the certificate from the surgeon?
  • When did you get your first payment?
  • How long did you take off?
  • How much time did you really need to take off?

Thank you,

Mr. 340

Hi K

Good luck on your surgery!

We went thru craving change together.

I think you would be back at work before you got EI.  It takes 6 weeks.  Alot if the people that I have met at group meets said they took off 3 weeks and were back at work no problem.

I've booked off two weeks. I sit at a desk all day for work. if I am feeling crappy I will take that 3rd week off.

All I can remember from when I used sick time through EI is that I didn't have to serve the 2 week waiting period and you have to use up any sick time you have through your employer.

Best of luck!

Good luck with your surgery. I had a Roux-en-Y on May 13th. Fortunately, I am an educator so I have been off work since then. I will go back to work in the fall again. I had paid sick leave benefits for the entire time I was off work. I have been very fortunate that way.

well hopefully things are still this way. Hard to say with all the new changes. As of today I am an occassional claimant because I claim EI every summer.

Hi and congrats on your upcoming surgery date! I was off on EI sick benefits, you can apply the last day you work. There is a two week waiting period for which you are not paid and the length of time it takes is dependent on EI themselves. My doctor kept me off work for close to 8 weeks. It's a major surgery and he wanted to ensure that I had enough healing time before going back. Everyone is different in their healing and the amount of time you will need will depend on you and the type of work you do. Talk to your doctor and make sure you do what's best for you, no need to rush back before you are ready. Good Luck!
