Slowly moving into phase 2

My surgery was recent and I've been doing really good and I'm getting really frustrated with putting protein powder in everything so I have slowly started to move into the pured food stage.  I had some yogurt for breakfast and am considering some refried beans for dinner.  I'm still only eating small portions but is this okay if I start to transition over?

Glad to hear you are doing good!

Any tips to survive the boost diet?

Just from reading posts on here, some are die hards and suggest following the diet to a tee, others suggest do whats comfortable for you..

I'm doing really good.  The boost diet wasn't really that bad.  It actually didn't really bother me until about a week and half in when I was tired of it and really wanted something else but only had a few days to go so I just kept telling myself that.  I did go to bed early a lot just so that I wouldn't think of food or get grouchy because I couldn't have anything.  That worked well for me, plus I felt great from the extra sleep I was getting. lol.

Congratulations on your surgery. Did your Dr give you a food plan? I would stick to whatever he/she gave you. Try to like your protein powder it will be your best friend for a long time. You need the protein to keep your muscles strong and healthy. Remember that your organs are muscles too.  Good luck and it does get easier.

Dr. Sauceda future patient  - body will be by Sauceda!

Thanks!   They don't really give a food plan.  The booklet they give lists the stages that you need to go through which are:

Phase 1 - Liquid Foods - Typical time: up to 1 week after surgery

Phase 2 - Pureed Foods - Typical time: 1-4 weeks after surgery (You must be tolerating foods from Phase 1 to move to this phase)

Phase 3 - Soft, Minced Foods - Typical time: 4-8 weeks after surgery

Phase 4 - Regular Foods - Typical time: 8-12 weeks after surgery

My surgery went very well, the surgeon said it was "textbook".  From the time I woke up from it I haven't had any pain meds either in the hospital or at home yet.  I am still tired a lot and still sleep a bunch but other than that I have had no problems sipping or getting in my vitamins.  I haven't been sick yet - I am sure that it will probably happen at some point but because I did so much research and read all of your posts I think I am more aware of what I should/should not do and because I'm doing it properly and so slowly it's been okay so far.

It's not that I don't like the protein powder, I have beneprotein and it's fine, I'm almost through one container already but my issue is that I am tired of adding it to the liquids - it's horrible and chunky in  the broth, okay in the jello and great in my iced tea and added to boost.  I want to add different ways to get protein in.  I had a small greek yogurt this morning and added some beneprotein to that, it was really good to have different texture and it still took me a long time to eat it, I'm eating slow and putting it down between spoons so that I get used to that habit.  I don't want to ru**** at all because I want this to work and to change me and my behaviors but I also feel like I'm ready to have the pureed foods, even if it's just one or two a day to have the different texture and extra protein..

No beans yet...too gassy for one and too hard for stomach to break down yet as Higgins fiber. You need to eat very simple puréed stuff that is VERY easy for your stomach to process and digest...remember it has been cut so the more difficult it is to process the food the harder and longer it will take to heal.....think like you are feeding a baby.....homemade puréed soups, or soups in the cartons without vegetables, ...apple sauce, greek yogurt, pudding, anything puréed stuff. Add a little protein powder in to anything you can as you purée it to UP the PROTEIN. Don't Worry about calories as you eat so little anyways and you need to get in some protein. Drink milk and make a protein shakes in a blender with fresh fruit like a banana and peanut butter, peaches or,pears. Don't use strawberries yet, there are small seeds, give it another few weeks for them. Like I said, think feeding a baby for the 1 st few weeks to give your stomach time to heal, then start moving into soft foods like cottage cheese, soft boiled eggs. Good luck..Barb C, bcwaiting

Yeah that's all I really need, yogurt, pudding, cream soups, something to break up the constant liquids and more variety to put the protein powder in.   Peanut  butter and banana protein shakes?  Do you have a recipe on how to make it, it sounds delish!   What are your thoughts on carrot and turnip mash? too soon for that even if it's mashed really well?

if your protien is chunky i would suggest you mix it cold first with a hand held or full size blender then slowly add it to your hot stuff.protien powder doesnt like to be added to hot stuff.i make mine into a paste then slowly add it to my hot stuff.i also do this for my click protien coffee :).i mix it then nuke it until its hot that way there are no clumps

I never thought of mixing it first.  I'll have to try that.  Thanks!

Does anyone have any other good protein drinks that we can get here?  i haven't really looked too much and am getting really tired of the boost since I already did 2 weeks of it.

Yes, I made mashed carrot and parsnip in around week 3/ 4. Also mashed sweet potato or regular potato and added Beneprotein, or skim milk powder into the potatoes and milk to make it real easy to go down. Ma**** really well or whiz it with electric hand whizzer to make sure it is also like purée. I also puréed canned salmon with some tomato juice or ragu sauce as a liquid added to be able to purée it. It ends up tasting like a chowder soup. Just experiment and see what works but don't rush into eating things that are going to be hard to digest for at least a month. Barb C, BCwaiting.
