weight loss before surgery
Hi
I was told I needed to lose 14 lbs before my next appointment. I had 2 months. I have cut out pop 100%, drinking more water, cut out my timmie's, severely reduced pasta and breads, increased my veggies and protein and alot more walking. I have gone one month... and not lost a single pound. I have a month before my next appt.
If I don't lose the weight, does that bump me?
Does anyone have any tips to help with the weight loss over the next month?
I don't mean to sound sarcastic but if I could lose weight, I wouldn't be in que for the surgery.. know what I mean?
I was there too, didn't lose the full amount they wanted. It was okay, they mainly want to see that you didn't gain and that you are learning to make the changes. I did however lose just over half of what they wanted me to, not sure what they would say with no loss. Reducing carbs and working to get more exercise in should make you lose some for sure. I could really only suggest doing more exercise and more water. Once I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks just from upping my water level, it was all water weight but it still felt good and gave me motivation. lol.
You haven't mentioned whether you track your food or not but that might help to control you food/water intakes. If you use My Fitness Pal (which is free) you can also track the calories you burn in your exercise sessions. Sometimes it helps just to see your numbers in black and white to see what is really going on with your calories, water, carbs, etc. I also find it really really good as a deterrent, if I am wanting something that probably isn't in my best intrest at this stage of the game, I'll put it in my food diary on MFP for the day and it will show me the numbers..... it really helps me decide if I really want/need whatever it is I'm lusting after.
The thing is that you have to be honest with your diary, ..... if you bite it, write it! This is all really good practice for after surgery when your protein and water are essential for good health and more importantly, healthy weight loss.
It takes a little while to set yourself up on MFP, If you do decide to join (or if you are already on there) please feel free to "freiend request" me. I am drusk66.
You can do this, the change doesn't start when the knife hits the skin through...... you are already changing so embrace it!
Hi,
I had the same thoughts exactly....if I could lose weight I wouldn't need the surgery! Duh!! :)
I lost 24 pounds preop by doing 1 or 2 protein shakes a day with fruit and some yogurt in them as well as 1 or 2 small meals. I used the Visalus shake mix and loved it. I would look forward to it every day. The main reason they want you to lose weight is to lessen the fatty deposits around the organs, specifically the liver, which makes the surgery an easier job.
If you would like to try the Visalus I have a bag of unopened mix that I would give to you. Since surgery, I can't seem to stomach it and it's just sitting here.

Hi ladies! Thank you for the advice!
What doesn't help is that I've been sick with a cold which recently turned to pnemonia. Definately don't feel like doing a thing.
I would love to take you up on that offer for the shake Patti! I need motivation.
Also. leaving for Cuba next week for my daughter's wedding. I'm a bit worried about the foods there. But 'looking forward to alot of walks on the beach!
I have used MFP, and find it hard to remember to track stuff, but like the advice "if you bite..."
Sad to say that these few months seems like a bad time to attempt this. But yet, don't want to postpone anything either.
sigh....
Good luck! Be extra careful with your food in Cuba, I just got back from a cruise and I gained even with walking all over the ship and always taking the stairs. My husband even gained 15 lbs! YIKES!! We both lost it quite quickly but depending on when your appointment is be careful! But still have fun!!
I've heard if you don't lose at all or if you gain they keep the goal and make another appointment a month or two down the road so there COULD be a delay, but at least it's a short one.
