Pre Op Tests

What tests did you have to do to prove you were "fit" for surgery? IE: EKG, chest extra, etc.

I had a Barium Swallow (b/c I had the VSG), about 30 vials of blood taken from me, chest x-ray , EKG and the routine pre-op physical from my Dr. who filled out whatever forms were sent to me by the clinic. Make sure your Iron is good....the levels have to be between 5 and 25...I just made it with a level of 5 (which is low, I'm borderline anemic).

So far, I've just had the routine pre-op physical from my doctor and LOTS of vials of blood taken.   They said there may be more tests required after they've all been reviewed but that's all I've had done.

in what stage of the process do they tell you what tests to request? I am having my two month follow up (after the initial consult with psych./nurse/.dietitian/keiniolosist), and I am wondering when they will ask me to get these tests done?

Once you and the surgeon decide which procedure you want then you should be notified as to what extra tests are done. When I had my consult, I was immediately sent for blood work and told that I would be contacted about a date for the Barium Swallow. At some point you will get a package in the mail with some forms that have to be completed by your Dr. for your pre-op physical..that is where you'll get more bloodwork, the EKG and Chest X-ray. I believe you won't get your surgery date until these forms are received by the clinic.

A week or so before surgery, you'll have to meet with a Nurse and Anesthetist at the Vic.
