i'm reading a lot of pre-op and post-op stuff.. and have the impression that artificial sweeteners are common. is it possible to do pre/post without artificial sweeteners, especially splenda/sucralose?

My answer would be " it depends"

Are you willing to give up sweets?

A lot of protein powders contain artificial sweetners. Might be harder to find ones you like early out that are unflavoured/unsweetened.

With the sleeve it would be easier imo. With RNY if you dump on sugar ( only about 30 % of rny'ers are dumpers ) and have to eliminate all sweets and things like flavored proteins  it would be tougher.

I do small amounts of sugar and sweets ..... with the sleeve it doesn't bother me but it does add calories I don't really need. I like my splenda or aspartame in my coffee still.

yeah, i don't know what my future status will be as far as sweets are concerned. i'm waiting to be accepted right now so i don't know if i'll get RNY or VSG, but i think the dumping would actually work in my favour because i DO tend to overdo it on sweets. when i look around it seems like sucralose is just everywhere and that has me worried. i don't do well with chemical sweeteners.

one wonderful word!- STEVIA!!!!! not artifical, its a natural non-caloric sweetner, theres even a pro powder called "about time" thats made out of it. but im pretty sure you have to order it on line. i buy my stevia in baggies ( lol ) from eatit.ca, its on wall right off portage ave. yes its a walk in store. i am very anti-aspartame ( any artifical sweetner really, but especially aspartame) i use stevia and make my own lemonade, and i use it in tea, thats all i drink all day, i love it!! you can also find stevia at health food stores, and i think superstore has packets of stevia. i like the baggies though, its the best price we have found and easiest, and to me the best tasting, but perhaps its just what your used to. warning though, its not cheap. but for me its sooooo worth it! plus you only need the tinyest bit , its very sweet. i use 1 tblsp per litre of lemonade, compared to like half a cup of sugar, or more. 1/2 tsp in my tea, which i like crazy sweet so im sure that would be to much for most people. hope this helps !
