One Last Try . . . .

So I am sure that everyone on this forum, like myself,  has tried diets up the wazoo!  I have been on the waiting list since May and am hoping to hear about some appointments in spring.  I wasn't actively trying to lose weight at all since I got my acceptance letter.  My fear was that if I DID manage to lose weight, that when I got called in for the appointments I might have too low a BMI and not be eligible for surgery anymore.  In the past I have often lost the weight but then gained it right back, and I didn't want to lose my chance at surgery just because I happened to be in one of my "down" phases.

However, I decided that was backwards thinking and that I really MUST try to do something else about this weight - I am tired of the feeling that I am just waiting around with my life on hold for that surgery.  Plus I had put on 10 lbs since my referral letter and that is discouraging.

So a friend of mine lost 70 lbs last year on Ideal Protein diet.  i finally got up the nerve to ask her about it and have started on it.  So far I find it easy to do and fits into my lifestyle quite well.  Every diet has some scientific premise behind it and this one sounds quite logical and seems to be quite healthy (my fingernails have NEVER) been this long!

So I am 18 days in and have lost 20.2 lbs (gotta love digital scales lol).  My hope is to lose another 10 before Christmas, planning to coast over Christmas (aim to maintain!) and then lose another 10 before we go to Florida at end of January.

I am still a little leary about possibly giving up the opportunity to have the surgery, but then my brain tells me that is silly and I should really be looking for a non-surgical solution to this problem if I can. In the meantime I am still on the waiting list and when I get an appointment I will certainly go to it and see what they have to say.

I tell you, if I can't lose and maintain on this diet then I am done with diets forever!!  This time its just gotta work!

I know exactly what you are going through . When I was referred my BMI was in the 40's. So worried about gaining weight and not being eligible, I started dieting. by the time I saw Dr Hardy, my BMI was down to 39. She went ahead with going with the VSG. Well, I continued to loose weight and by the time I was having surgery, my BMI was now down to 35. The anesthetist and everyone else I told I was having surgery was wondering what I was doing there and why was I still having this surgery. I told him that I have dieted all my life, lost weight and always regained it, so this time I was hoping it would be permanently off. Luckily, I was still able to have the surgery and now my BMI is down to 27. I have come to a 6 week stall for the first time in a year, but will continue to try to loose my last 20 pounds. I am glad I lost the weight (50 pounds) prior to having surgery as it wasnot such a sudden shock to my body as I think others have to deal with when they loose the weight so fast after having the surgery. their head and their skin doesn't get a chance to catch up. I have o regrets and encourage you to keep in the dieting mind set and it will be much easier for you in the long term. Good luck. Barb, BC waiting

Thanks for the words of encouragement Notorious Granny.  and BC Waiting you give me hope that maybe I will be able to still get the surgery and it will just be one more "tool" to help me along in my journey.

In the meantime I will keep going with this diet - - - feels good to be shedding some pounds and so great to have something that shows such quick results, which prevents a person from stalling out and getting discouraged.

Continuing to search for the solution . . . . .
