Extra Insurance
I was not able to get any extra insurance. I tried to get some, but wasn't able to find a company that would cover the facility that I went to. I just took my chances. You also need to be aware that you are not covered by standard travel insurance either because you are going specifically for surgery. I checked that with Blue Cross.
I found one company online that would provide extra insurance for facilities that were on their specified list (Obesity Control Center, where I went, wasn't on it) for $250. I found one other place that was charging ten times that amount...their quote was $2400!!
I no longer have any of the information. I deleted it all when I knew they wouldn't cover me. It might have been this one:
http://www.surgicaltourism.ca/insurance/
(I did a google search for medical tourism insurance for canadians to find it)
You fill out a form online and they will contact you with questions about where and when you are having surgery, etc. and they will tell you if they will cover you. I would have paid $250 for the peace of mind, although I had no problems or issues at all.
Good luck!

I did a lot of research and basically if you go down for surgery, you're not covered. A couple of things though.... I was considering going to the USA to make my family happier, but if anything serious happened while down there, oh man, I could have ended up with $500,000 to $1 million in charges from a hospital (surgery for a heart attack is about $500,000-$600,000). Plus most places in the USA would have had a 2-day hospital stay. Where I decided to go in Mexico (Dr. Aceves in Mexicali) is in a full-service hospital and if any complications happened down there, then they would have fixed it for no charge according to them. So yes, I took a chance in going south in the first place, but I figured that I was better off to go with a 4-day hospital stay where complications were covered since my existing Blue Cross didn't cover this trip, and I could not find any other insurance online that would cover it either. If you do go to Mexico, make sure you pick a surgeon that has an excellent track record and great reviews on this site and verticalsleevetalk (if you are having a VSG). Price isn't everything. Best of luck in your decision...!
