Extreme Hair Loss
I've been a lurker in the forum but haven't really posted. I had VSG in Tijuana with Dr. Ponce de Leon and Dr. Fraye in June 18th of this year. Everything was fantastic, I had no complications and have been absolutely fortunate in that I've had no issues since. I haven't been sick once and have no problems. I've been successful in losing 65lbs since the surgery and I'm thrilled to bits. I've never felt better in my life.
The question I have is, after VSG and the rapid and extreme weight loss has anyone experienced extreme hair loss? I've list about 2/3 of my hair since June. I'm lucky to have had lots if hair so it's not terribly noticeable. I go for my blood tests and everything is where it should be. I've been diligent about trying to make sure that my protein is good because I was warned that this could lead to hair loss. When I brush my hair, so much hair comes out the brush is full. When I was my hair it constantly comes out. If I run my fingers through it six or seven strands come out.
I know I shouldn't complain because everything has gone so well but it's very upsetting. Has anyone else experienced this? Does it stop?

I had my surgery with Dr. Ponce on June 14th. (just missed you). I am loosing lots of hair right now, this just started for me recently. I am hoping this stops too. This does happen to some people with wls. I don't know how common it is, but from what I have read on the duodenal switch forum it does stop and your hair will grow back. I have allways lost a lot of hair but right now it seems like a lot more. SCARRY. Barb.
I had my surgery on April 3 and I am finding the hair loss is slowing down now . It was bad for a couple of months . I bought biotin but didn't end up using it . Nioxin shampoo is supposed to help as well . I just figured time would help .... I too have lots of hair but it was shocking how much came out . My pony tail is much thinner now !
Glad to hear everythings going well for you except the hair. I too started losing my hair at 3 months and 4 month mark was even worse and Im still losing it..at almost 5 months..I had it cut shorter to mak eit look fuller and I use alot of hairspray to get it t stay in place. I sure hope it comes back as others have said. Not much you can do at this point but let it do its thing. I know how scary and frustrating it is..

I haven't had any hair loss yet as I'm only 2 months out and I've heard it starts to really kick in around 4-6 months. But...I have started taking Biotin before my surgery and my hair is growing like a weed and thicker than ever. I have so many people commenting on how long my hair has grown over the summer. My hair was so slow at growing, I really think the Biotin works. You can pick it up in the Vitamin section of Walmart!
I am 3 + years post op. I lost a lot of hair, I mean a lot, you could see my scalp. I managed to slow down the hair loss, but not stop it my using a vitamin called Silica. This was suggested by my WLS surgeon. I didn't think it was working, so I stopped using it. OMG, my hair loss doubled. I started again ASAP. I can also tell you that even though you loose the hair, it does grow back.
Hope this helps.
