What's in the iced coffee that made you dump?? You never had a dumping experience in a year?? Dumb question, but are we allowed sugar substitutes after surgery?? Can that bring on the dumping?
Also, can any new food make us dump or is it just sugar?

I don't envy you at all - hope you feel better now.
With the sleeve you aren't supposed to dump but I agree with you in trying new foods at home ! I have had such bad experiences with some foods - especially any sort of sweet liquid.. .not sure why only liquid - maybe because I am able to take it in fast ?
I had a hot chocolate that made me so sick to my stomach , an iced tea that I spent 4 hours puking and feeling like death- the only time I ever thought " dear god, why did I have the surgery?"
and also iced chai that left me feeling poopy. I've had other things not agree with me but nothing at all like sugar fluids- very odd. It's ok - I don't need those anyway and I shouldn't have them - good behaviour modification.
I've had food that doesn't agree with me ( bread, lettuce, some meats ) and I take papapya enzyme to help it digest - haven't needed it much but I think it helps a bit.

I know us VSG'ers aren't supposed to dump...but it sure seems like I do. I haven't figured out what foods cause the dumping, I know a couple times it seemed to be lactose related. I feel your pain about the "longest" 15 minute drive ever. That's happened to me twice....worst feeling ever! Thankfully the McD's iced coffees go down just fine.
Oh gosh, so sorry to hear about your experience. I have not tried mc d's but I have had tims and I have trouble getting them to leave out the beverage base usually have to ask them to remake it.
I have been pretty lucky with the dumping. I have only dumped once last Saturday. I think my problem was that it was around 8 hours between lunch and dinner because of work and the heat. I had been drinking water all day. I had eaten some grilled chicken and a few veggies the leftovers from supper the night before. I had a sip of water about 20 minutes after eating and started to feel really bad and after about 45 minutes of stomach cramps I finally threw up and almost instantly felt fine. I have had a reaction to frozen yogurt but that was just stomach ache followed by diarrhea.
Just lately I have been having trouble with chicken and usually can only eat about 1oz and I feel uncomfortable while I digest it. I had eaten grilled steak a few times this past week and have had no problems and have managed to eat 2-3 ozs I was leary to try it but so far it's been great.

alle- It doesn't sound like what you experinenced was dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome is caused by sugary food ( some people do react to fatty food ) since the pyloric valve doesn't regulate the emptying into the intestine and it is released quickly. The body tries to flood the intestines and you get a horrible reaction. Horrible anxiety, sweating, heart beating fast, stomach issues, then followed by diarrhea usually. I may be incorrect but if it was dumping , you wouldn't have anything to throw up 45 minutes later ( since the reason for the feelings is that the food left too quickly out of your pouch)
The odds are that you don't dump (I've read that 30% dump and 70% don't ) dumping can be a good thing if it keeps you away from foods you shouldn't have but it would feel terrible - alas it makes good behaviour modification.
Sounds , imo, that the food just didn't agree with you. Your pouch was being grumpy. I find it odd sometimes a food is fine and then the next week I can't stomach it. A lot of people become lactose intolerant after RNY as well....

My heart goes out to you. I have had a few horrible dumping episodes. They were enough to make me wish that I had the VSG instead of the RNY. (I didn't know that people could dump after the VSG - oh dear.)
Artificial sweetners don't cause dumping but excess sugar and fat do. My worst episode was after consuming too much of an oily salad dressing. It sent me into a full blown panic attack due to the extreme discomfort and then I was hurting for two days afterwards.
In time, I've learned what I can tolerate and what I cannot. Once in a while though, something can still surprise me by not digesting well. I agree with the comments above. The safest thing to do with a new food, is to try it at home first, when you have a bathroom handy.

Thing is people dump differently and they dump on different foods. I can eat a food for months, suddenly dump on it and then be fine again eating it. I am lucky, I can usually feel a dump coming on as my heart rate will quicken and if I stop eating whatever it is, it will usually be very mild. I have had maybe 3 severe dumping issues over the 15 or so months, but it is true, you only have to have one real bad dump on a food and it never looks yummy again!
Hmmmm well that doesn't sound like fun! I guess I haven't had a dumping episode yet then. I hope I never do from the sounds of things. I have really been good about staying away from sugar and fats in any amount. Better just keep it that way! I snuck in two sips of wine the other day and it had no effect on me....may work up to 3 or 4 one day soon.
